This is a good piece of advice but there is another side to look at.

If you don't want to due to nerves or any other major reason -- then don't!! It doesn't amtter if you play like Gordon Walker, if you don't enjoy it you will end up putting yourself off piping altogether. But you won't know until you try it. And don't let anyone pressure you into it either cause only you can make the decision. I know of a few people who I think would do really well in solos, but if they don't want to but do it after being pressured, it will make things worse!

Also, some people don't find it as easy as others to go between the 2 different styles of playing and this can hurt the band andthere is no reason for anyone to feel that this is a problem cause it isn't. Scottish Power used to be made up of 80% of the top solo pipers in the world, but as a bad they were coming in at the bottom half of the grade. The year that Roddy did the clear out, they were in the top 4 at every major. This is also something to think about and only the individual can be the judge of whether or not they can make that change 4 times in a weekend contest.

Like Elijah, it helped me a lot doing both and you'll never know until you try it. But don't be disheartened if you decide not to do solos. Shotts didn't have any top solo players until about 5 years ago and there is no one out there who has come anywhere near the record they had before or since.
