As Athletic Union President of Loughborough Students'whose job it is to provide students with the opportunity to play sport, represent them on sporting issues and foster an environment of student empowerment and responsibility, I am nothing short of appalled by the attitude of many of you 'so called' football enthusiasts. If we ever wish to compete on the same footings as the USA whilst still increasing the opportunities available for individuals to take part in this fantastic sport, how can we chastise a group of 18-22 year olds who run their own club, whilst getting a degree (from a reputable university)and are going through some of the most formative years of their lives. The Loughborough Students' Women's Football Club are just as dedicated as any other clubs in the league. Old CHestnut, you mention the 'hours of dedicated voluntary work' involved in the set up of non-student clubs - this is no different here. 3 student teams, taking on those who have never played the sport before along side those who have been in the game for years, takes 'hours of dedicated voluntary work.' You also question the 'wider ideals' of the club - i'm sorry, isn't introducing individuals to the game good enough? What about the fact that if they do return home many put to good use all that they have learnt here by getting involved with local teams on an organisational and developmental level. Many of our players are qualified coaches, using these skills to help the women's game.

I feel that you are taking a rather blinkered view to this issue. You make fleeting statements about wider ideals, make horrendous implications questioning our bona fide status, yet you fail to see that all we are trying to do is give more and more people the opportunity to play. Not only that, we do our best to get them playing at a high level, thereby doing our bit to enhance the game in this country. How then can you justifibaly say that we have no right to play?! Our passion is for the game, our dedication has been proven, our commitment for development of individuals and for the sport as a whole can not questioned! Therefore, who has the right to say that we are not good for the game of football!!
