Being someone who's worked for newspapers in the past, and having studied journalism at the high school and collegiate level, I can, in this rare occasion, actually speak up for the Town Talk in a positive light.
A newspaper's focus audience (in this case being central Louisiana) has to be super-served. One of the highest quality (and best awarded) newspapers in the country is the Rocky Mountain News, serving the greater Denvee metropolitan area. What makes that newspaper so heralded, both by journalists and her readership, is that the news directly affecting readers comes first; national and world affairs may be featured on the front page, but only when the news directly affects that area.
We must keep in mind that the Iraqi election is just one step in a long and arduous process for that nation's desire to become a full-fledged democracy. We must also remember that, here in the United States, we didn't have a viable constitution (or federal government, even) for many years AFTER the Revolutionary War and the initial Declaration of Independence of 1776.
It's just a step. Does it equate to the tearing down of the Berlin Wall? Not as much, for Americans. European descendantry far outnumbers Iraqi-American descendantry in the United States. And before anybody regurgitates the argument that we have people in our military serving there, let's remember the tens of thousands of lives we lost in WWII, along with the thousands who still serve for us in Europe.
It's just a step. For Bush supporters and Republicans on the whole, it's deemed as a "victory" of sorts. I think it's just a step. Having the elections go off without a hitch, having all those elected officials survive the terms without assassination, having a formulated government with a formulated military capable of protecting itself without American backing... now THAT would be headline-worthy news.
It's just a step.
Now, if the THOUSANDS of central Louisiana guardsmen and military servicemen and women were to all come home at once, I'm sure The Town Talk would find the homecoming to be front page news, as well. That would be a story directly affecting the Town Talk's readership. That's a front page worth saving for posterity.
