Subject: What A Great Day For Sailing!

What A Great Day For Sailing!

And indeed Sunday was a great day for sailing, only one problem. We were riding not sailing we were riding. You wonder what I am referring to? The Poker run that was put on by the East Coast HOG Chapter this past Sunday. As a chapter we had very good participation, even out chapter president, “Dan the flying parts man Findley” made it out despite a problem with a battery being a little low, but that is another story.

The day started out with us meeting at the dealership at 7:45 am and then we proceeded onto Heritage Cycles to get registered at around 8:00 am. Once registered, we headed across the street for some breakfast before heading out on the run. No spilling incidents this time but that was due to the fact that Dan was late getting there and we had already finished eating.

We returned to the Harley shop in time to mingle a little bit and catch the riders meeting. We pulled out somewhere between 9:30 and 10:00 am to begin the run. The first stop was none other than the Lucky 13 Truck Stop as usual. We stop there for a few minutes so that everyone could check out their bikes, grab something to drink and get ready to head to the next stop. But, prior to getting to Lucky 13 we had to travel through Hwy 285 wind tunnel. How strong was the wind you ask? Well, let me tell you, even on the straights at times it looked as though we were banking for a turn.

Our next stop was to be Wal-Mart in Defuniak Springs. See a pattern here Lucky 13 then Wal-Mart, sounds like a few other poker runs we have been on. The ride from Lucky 13 to Defuniak Springs was pretty uneventful other than a few good wind gusts here and there. But, up to this point it had been a great ride. A little cool but, the day was great, with the clear sky and very sunny weather.

From Defuniak, we proceeded down Hwy 331 to Freeport where we made a rest stop to take care of business before moving on. Once everyone loaded back up on their rides we headed on down 331 towards Hwy 98. It was along this road that we thought that our bikes were about to become jet skis. When we reached the stretch in the road just prior to the bridge. The wind was blowing so strong here that the bay was white capping and crashing up over the rocks on the side of the road but, we were not to be deterred in our quest for the next stop.

The ride was going well and at a good pace until we reached Hwy 98 and headed west to our next stop, Wal-Mart in Destin. The traffic was so heavy, that at this point we were traveling at top speeds of as much as 15 mph. We all agreed that they should have chosen another route to come back in on, but we pressed on to the next checkpoint with the greatest of determination. We pondered the idea of eating at Hooter’s but with the flow of traffic like it was we decided to press on in order to make it in on time.

We arrived back at Heritage around 2:00 pm and headed to the restaurant located next to the Harley dealership for a bite of lunch. While sitting there chatting who pulls up? As we say, better late than never, who do you think pulled up? None other, than our chapter V.P. Mr. Howard Andrew. He had some excuse about having to work but I don’t know if we believed him or not. Ha ha ha ha ha.

Despite the wind and slow traffic we made a good ride of it and had a great time. For all of those that were unable to make it out we hope that you can make it next time. The turnout over all for the event by everybody was very good, a great showing of support by many clubs around the area.

Until next time keep the rubber side down and the shinny side up and wind in your face.
