Subject: Troubleshooting

My 1957 30' open Sea Skiff wes closely examined over the winter to identify and correct sources of noise and vibration. We have accomplished a very great improvement. The findings might be helpful to others as you keep these wonderful woodies in shape. We found 1.) the duplex wood pads through which the rudders were mounted were loosely located, bedding had deteriorated and pads were cracked or split. This was also the condition of the strut pads. All four were replaced. 2.) While rudders were OK, the packing glands and shafthead retainers were worn and replaced. 3.) all Yoke connections in the steering system rods were badly worn or corroded. The threaded pins were especially bad. The yokes were drilled and bushed and new shouldered pins used. 4.) the props, which had been reconditioned numerous times before and said to be OK were viewed through new closer standards. While meeting the needs of 95% of the applications, the props were replaced. Consistent blade shape within the unit and between the units was improved markedly. All These changes have resulted in a great gain in smoothness and reduced noise. Performance is better with the new 14x12 cupped propellers replacing the old 14x11 on this repowered hull using twin 2001 Chrysler LM 225HP V8s. The lesson seems to be that tighter standards show the way to better performance. Bob
