Correct prop?
Hello,
I haven't noticed anyone from the Chesapeake Bay area here; guess I'll be the one. Dad recently bought a 57 22' CC Skiff. It needs a complete restoration, though he won't admit it yet. She needs many frames replaced and was stored poorly. Anyway, during our fixing and patching to slow the tide, we thought the prop is way too small. There just seemed to be a lot of extra clearance. We dug through the paperwork and found a 1986 survey states a 13" prop. Right now it is only 10". Bronze doesn?t shrink, does it? The engine is the original "K" series with a single carb. I have read they came with as many as three. Does anyone have an idea what may be the properly sized prop? We wouldn't mind getting all the power (economy) the girl has to offer, assuming the hull stays together.
Fair winds,
Glenn Ross

We also have a 57 22' skiff and we have had the boat repowered to a 350. She really gets up and goes now. We also changed the prop size to a 14 square. YEP, she IS over propped but I have compensated for the torque with wedges on the bottom and a small homemade trim tab on the rudder. I am glad you have joined our club. Maybe we can get a rendezvous together next year in your area, Alan

Alan,
Thanks for the warm welcome. I think I get your point, The BIGGER the better!! Just kidding. I realize that the 350 may give the torque needed for the 14" X 14; sounds cool. But I don't see dad repowering until we get the hull squared away. ( I kinda like the old flat head six ) I'm not sure what you mean by wedges. IS this like a steped hull sort of thing as on the offshore racers? (Fountian / Cigarette)and I'll also guess that the trim tabs on the rudder are to compinsate for the turbulant flow engulfing the entire rudder surface or does the boat now want to veer to starbord.
Anyway, how did you calculate the prop size to match your power plant?

Sorry it took so long to reply. Been working on my Skiff, trying to get her ready for our "big" trip to Canada with the ACBS group. The wedges are tapered from thin to 1/4" approximately 10 inches long and 2.5 inches wide and are mounted fore and aft (thin fore and thicker aft) to give the port side of the boat a "lift" when running. As for the prop size, there is a chart of sorts and I will look for it and try to send it to you or at least give information to you.

Seems that you have come up with a practical solution to the added torque. Any help with the prop sizing would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks much,
Glenn R.

Glenn,
I have a 61 27' Skiff I am restoring. A MAJOR restoration! I live in Annapolis and the boat is in Cordova, MD. at Dockside Boat Works. This boat was built in Salisbury so she too is local to the Bay area.

Mark,
I knew there had to be others in the area. Tell me more. Are you going to stay origonal or making pratical changes in layout or materials? How far along are you? I was in Rock Hall this week. There was a nice 19 footer for sale.
Did you see the storm on Sat 8/16? There is an ancorage neer Still Pond, all but a few of the boats (20 or so)were blown and piled ashore. The worst visable damage was to a 1960s 26-27' Egg Harbor. Someone's inflatable landed on/in the hardtop sedan roof. I've been arround some and have never seen anything like it, except a huricane. Not a single injury out of the whole mess.

For all the info that Chris Craft had is now in the Mariners Museun. They should be able to get you the info. They also have a CD that you can buy that has a lot of info on it that helps with the engine parts and repair and prop sizes.

I just looked up your correct prop size on the CD that I told you about. It is 11 1/2 X 12 X 1"

That is awsom information. Both the prop and th CD. Now I have a better excuse to go to the museum; and not to adjust the carburator intil we get the correct prop.
Many many THANKS!

Hi Glenn,
You are not the only one in the area. I am in Annapolis and I am restoring a 1958 18' Chris Craft Sea Skiff.
Feel free to e-mail with any questions.
Andy
