Subject: 1959 CC Ranger

I'm looking at a 1959 Ranger. While I've always wanted a wood boat, I am of course a bit leary. I hope to go look at it Sunday (8/17). Can I ask the list subscribers to let me know what they think I should look for while inspecting the boat? Be as verbose as you like, either here or mail me at Harlyred1@aol.com. Seriously, get the boat out of the water & up on a hoist, so you can probe & prod every inch of her....check the bottom....pull the floorboards & check the inside boards, the ribs & frames. Look for any sign of delamination, take an awl or knife & "poke" various places to see if they are soft. If you can hook her up to a hose or something, crank the engine & make sure the water pump is functioning....but for the most part, CHECK FOR ROT! The cosmetic work can be done with time, but don't get stuck with a boat that has a soft bottom or 20 out of 22 ribs/frames bad...Check the stringers make sure they are solid & there's no oil in the bilge...I wish I had more advice for you. If you know of a boat surveyor in your area, it might be beneficial to pay them to examine the boat for you. But just probe & prod every square inch, LOL! Good Luck!

I know from experience, I am just replacing planks on my bottom, and have had fuel and water pump problems.....so just do the best you can!
