Subject: Thoughts on 1960 30' Sea Skiff

There's a fellow with a 30' 1960 Sea Skiff for sale at what seems like quite a good price. It's in running condition, original engines. Interior is mostly original as well. Are there any particular "trouble spots" I should be checking for in this model and year? Based on a quick first look, it does seem pretty clean and sound...

Hi Brent! With a 30 footer, I would definitely make arrangements (if its in the water) to have it pulled so you can check the bottom for soft spots. I've know lots of people who have bought woodies (not just skiffs) thinking it was in great shape, but then found MAJOR problems with the bottom. It you aren't familiar, it might be worth it to hire someone to survey the boat for you to give you an idea of any (if there are some) problems. >llo Brent,A 30' Sea Skiff of 1960 should be fully surveyed not because it is suspect but because it is a 40 year old wooden structure with double the mechanical systems of smaller units.Check the bottom corners of the deck-to-windshield joint and also the strakes from the turn of the hull down to between the engines at the keel for soundness.These spots go first in most boats.The origional engines must have lots of hours and I would plan on full rework. Brent, It looks like you already have some very good advise.
As have made my living as Boat Capt. and working for a builder in many different roles.I still would get a outside party to look at any boat that I would buy for myself. I got two boates for myself that I over looked problems that I should have seen because I just had to have that boat.
Just make sure that the boat is sound in arers that water can collect and joints where water can get in for starters
