 FWIW (and Gail can correct me here) a similar principle to the qualifier was used at a comp in Portishead on Sunday, but taken a couple of steps further.
All couples danced and were split into 2 groups. Each of the sub group danced, and was split further until there were 4 "finals"
So the new format isn't entirely novel, and shouldn't cause major problems for the officials :)
