The comp at Portishead was run by Richard Hopkins, a friend of the university circuit I believe. He, in conjunction with Richard Rose, is thinking about running more comps on the same basis.

It was a really good idea in that everyone got to dance the same number of times in the modern 4 dance (3) and in the latin 4 dance (only twice). Further, there were people there who had either not competed for some time or had never competed so it was good to encourage those people out on to the floor in what was a fairly non-threatening environment. The message was that if you couldn't do a particular dance not to worry and couple 17 notable winners of the over 80s consolation trophy, didn't dance quickstep. Everyone started at the same level so there was no need to analyse whether today was an Intermediate only day or a risking it at Pre-champ day!

However, although the theory was to split people up on ability so you ended up dancing a final against people of your own ability, the marking was fairly unsophisticated, in the modern the adjudicator just selected two from each of the four heats to go into the red semi and two to go into the yellow (euphemisms for Div 1 and 2). She did not look across all the heats to select -- which might well be an impossible task if the field was large in any case. So you needed to take it in the spirit it was intended and just accept that the standard in any two heats could be wildly different. To illustrate, there was one heat with one good couple only so they and a *very* average senior intermediate couple went into the red (which pleased them enormously!) but another which had the eventual first and the third placed couples. I expect that the standard would be likely to even out the larger the field so would become less of an issue.

There are clearly a number of parallels with the new team marking system. I remember a discussion on the board about randomising heats and the experience on Sunday suggests that that is a good idea. I can't remember how that was to be acheived but presumably Ali's document or previous working practices deal with it.....
