I agree with Robin, I also think allowing ex-students in student competitions is contradictory.

It's bad enough for newbies who see dancers who have been on the student circuit for years, knowing they only have 3-4 yrs to achieve a similar standard in order to get anywhere, unless they want to string out a PhD for decades.... Letting ex-students compete on a par with current students is a not a level playing field. Sure we get the odd amateur dancer infiltrate, and some students have been around forever, but that is the exception.

I know of ex-students who said they would like to come back and win (... the lure of that precious piece of plastic should not be undestimated). However, not everyone has trophy fever and are happy to support their former teams without the need to compete, or are happy to do so in their own section. There is plenty of opportunity to win trophies on the open circuit, pick any small comp and it's likely to be a straight final anyway.

For mixed ex/current partnerships, are there really no student partners to be had, or are they just not as good?
Is it personal glory we are seeking or do we have the good of the team at heart? For the former go the open circuit, for the latter, train a beginner, many of us have.

As a student I thought ex-studs should stop trying to muscle in, as an ex, I've had my time and moved on. I still care about the university circuit and want to see fair play for the student dancer.
