Tim, you said you thought it was just two cambridge couples whining and nothing's wrong. Conversly, one could also say it's just you and 2 others stomping their feet down shouting: "Nothing's wrong!!" In order to get an idea of the general opinion on whether there is a problem or not, maybe we should have an online voting system or such? Just an idea.

I went to a few group lessons in germany, where in the open circuit (not sure about it in GB), there are strict rules about what level you dance in, and people desparately try to get the points they need so they can dance up one level, which is seen as a great achievement. Here, people seem to call reaching a level where you should dance up a punishment!!!!

The uni circuit is great because it's friendly, but maybe it's too "nice" in that people get used to being told they're great... i.e. winning intermediate. I don't understand why someone who might have a chance at making a round of advanced wouldn't want to try it, because winning intermediate really doesn't mean much (sorry, harsh but true). But I think robin's proposal would make advanced less scary for people that just don't think quite like me in that respect.
