Thanks to Ms Janice and her awesome staff for a wonderful pageant. It was my first big National and you all did so much to make me feel right at home.
Thanks Miss Beth Chambers for making me look like a "Little China Girl". Thanks Miss Donna and Miss Bonnie for my awesome pictures. Sweet and Sassy, my comp card was a winner!! Miss Kathy you did such a wonderful job on my clothes, they fit like a glove. Thanks to Tooties tan for my awesome toes and tan. Miss Dana Major, I cant believe you drove all the way to Alabama just for me!!
Miss Dawn, there are no words. I cant believe how far you have brought me in such a short time. 6 months ago, I could barely walk across a stage without falling down, now I can do it in 5 inch heels. Thank you so much.
I loved meeting all the new girls, Mary you are absolutely beautiful. Little Miss Tootie, I loved watching you onstage, you’re a little firecracker in that western wear. Allie, you are so lovely. Bree, next time we are going to the Cracker Barrel, even if we have to walk 500 miles to get there.
My little sister Tashana and my Mom, thanks for believing in me. It means more to me than you will ever know.

PAGEANT COACHING
1. It does'nt REALLY matter who you go to as long as you go to one of the top teachers. They are all pretty good in their own ways.
However, what DOES matter is:
How you leave a coach. When you leave and most do, always leave the door open and make sure your coach knows what you are doing (never lie to her). Even if she gets mad, you can still sleep at night knowing you left the right way and with self respect. As long as you do the right thing... that's all that really matters. How SHE handles it is her business not yours. The beauty of this is, even if you have messed up in the past, you can know better in the future and not let it happen again.
2. Don't be afraid to go up to other coaches at pageants. There is no reason not too. Find a good time, and you can just go up and say hello... my name is ____ and my daughter is ___. We go to ___ but think you are really good too. Keep up the good work & good luck this weekend. You may have to set yourself aside from a negative group, but isn't this YOUR daughters childhood memories? Make them the best you can. There is no room for adult pettyness in a child's life.
PICTURES.
Go to the best. Bite the bullett and pay the cash for good pics. Don't get stuck with the same photographer everytime. Variety is always key, so to have a couple of photographers is a good thing. Also be upfront with them, let them know that you will be making the rounds with only the best and they are one of them.
PAGEANT DIRECTORS.
1. Always say thank-you after a pageant. There are HOURS of work that you will never even know they did for you.
2. Wait 5 days before you complain to a director. After 5 days you must really have a problem. Sometimes we can let our hot heads make real donkeys of ourselves when we react in the moment.
3. Always ask a director BEFORE they pageant what they are looking for in their royality. Don't be afraid to ask her how she will be instructing her judges. You have the right to know exactly what she tells her judges to look for and most directors welcome these questions.
JUDGES.
Again... always say thank-you to each of them. They usually are only following the pageants directions when choosing their winners. The opinion on paper may not always be who they would have choosen on their own, but they had to follow instructions from the director and I'm sure they do the best they can.
CLOTHES.
Keep up with the times and even a step ahead. Fit/fashion/coloring is very important. Home made stuff ususally looks "home made" so stay away, unless you are VERY talented.
PAGEANT FRIENDS.
Pageant friends are mainly for your daughters. Be the mom and support her and her friends. Not to say that there haven't been some very good friendships with parents too. There have been. But, you must remember that this is a very competitive situation and things can get blown way out or turn petty anytime our children are involved. Not always but just something to be aware of. A nice friendly approach to everyone is what I have noticed to take the test of time.

Miss Nicole, thanks for the putting on such an awesome pageant. I had the best time ever! I could not believe it when they called my name for this title, I didn't know if I should laugh or cry. Miss Kathy, thanks for working so hard on my dress, it was so beautiful. And you did the most awesome job on my hair and make up, I almost didn't even recognize myself. lol When my mom saw me all done up with my gown on, it made her get tears in her eyes!! Miss Donna, thanks for my new pictures. I totally love them! Miss Dawn, what can I say? When mom asked me if I wanted to do this pageant, I was really freaked out by it but you worked hard with me and I ended up doing great. You took me from tomboy to Darling in only 4 hours. I am excited to announce the Mrs. Washington Globe, Mrs. Oregon Globe and Mrs. Idaho Globe Pageant under new directorship for 2006. The pageant will take place April 22 at Normanna Hall in Tacoma, WA. I am Tia Hunsperger and I have been involved in the Globe System as a contestant for the last three years as well as a Right Living Teacher in my community. I have been receiving a few emails recently regarding things people have "heard" about UMMI or UF, so I wanted to share some of my thoughts on this with all of you.
First, let me share my general pageant philosophy. If a pageant comes around that you think sounds interesting, maybe it has an event you have never tried, special prizes you find interesting, or something you can't put your finger on - GIVE IT A TRY!!!! The WONDERFUL thing about having different types of pageants in the Northwest is that there is likely something "just right" for everyone. But you will never know unless you try! Recently I entered my daughter in a pageant that is very different than anything we have ever tried before. I didn't go expecting anything other than to have a good time with family, get in a little swimming pool time, and try something new! It was a wonderful experience and something we will definately try again in the future. But the only way you are going to know if a pageant is a "good fit" for you and your contestant is to give it a try! Then make your own decision about whether or not it is something that meets with your familys needs and expectations. Always keep in mind that you will never truely know if something is right for you without personal experience.
Second, training with a pageant coach is NOT required to "Win" UF or UMMI. However, as with anything, your progress can be expedited with one on one focussed attention. Coaches are very good for finding areas that need attention and telling you what "to do". However, as I am sure anyone will tell you, the improvement comes from practicing what you have learned. Whether you learned it from a coach or some other way, practice is the key! UMMI and UF are looking for contestants who feel comfortable and look happy on stage. Over the past 4 years I have had several "winners" with coaches and several without. Several of my state Grand Supremes over the years have not had coaches, it is about 50/50. I have also had contestants with coaches place first in their division and contestants with coaches place last. The one common element that all the first place finishers have is confidence and great smiles! As with my note above - how to get that, whether through a coach or on your own, is a personal decision and that decision is different for everyone.
So, while I do feel that input from others can be helpful, the final decisions regarding pageants, coaching, clothing styles, etc should all be personal decisions.

I was wondering the same thing. There are a few coming up, and kind of close together. We wish we could do them all but financially I dont think thats possible. We know everything about UMMI and look forward to that one but not familiar with Ultimate Dream Queen or Sunburst, it would be nice to get more information and suggestions on those two.

My daughter would prefer to have a smaller crown, but have colored stones in it. Perhaps stones that represent the colors of the pageant system.
So many of the regular crowns you see at most all of the pageants. We've received the same exact crown at several pageants.

It depends on the pageant and the system. If its a big national pageant like that one then yes. State and preliminary pageants have smaller crowns, bigger the pageant bigger the crowns .

There are several types of systems in this area I will try and classify them for you... This is mostly my opinion...
Natural
Cinderella
Universal Faces
Miss American CoEd
National All American Miss
Middle - These allow glitzy type clothes but have some H/M rules
Sunburst
All American Dream Star
Miss American Belle
Glitz
Cover Miss
Ultimate Dream Queen
Universal Miss
SO - If you were to ask me my opinion - I would say in the NW we don't have "mostly" any specific kind of pageant. That is what I think is so great - there is something for everyone. =)
That being said - even the "Glitz" pageants in this area are not quite what you would see in the South. Most of the contestants in this area don't do the National Southern style glitz so while we have some glitz systems and it is allowed - you won't see everyone in full southern glitz.

I dont mean to offend anyone but is the northwest like some of the pageants from the south- where they make their 3 year old look like she is 20?? I love pageants, and everything about them expect for that- are there many natural ones? I want my daughter to experience the pageant world, but still look like a child.

Your question about posting... People do reply - but it is the way that the board is set up - it appears the board owner has it set up such that the most recent post is at the top.
Your question about pageants... There are several moms of child contestants who competed in pageants as children. There are also several moms that didn't compete as well as several moms who competed as adults. The best way to get started is by attending a prelim in your area. From there you can usually get information about other pageant systems. There are several systems here in the northwest - from very natural to very glitzy. Different systems focus on different things - so there really is something for everyone. My personal advise would be to give several different systems a try - see which kind fits best with your goals and go from there. The moms here in the NW are all very nice and if you have any questions - I am sure any of them would be willing to help. =)

Another pageant Mom and I were wondering how much interest there
would be in us putting together a "Pageant Closet Cleanout". Items
such as: clothes, shoes, old talent tapes, etc.
Our initial thoughts are:
1. Plan for it in the spring (ie Feb/March)
2. Although we both live in Oregon, we were thinking that if we did
it up in WA, maybe Tacoma or somewhere around there, we'd get a lot
more people from WA and maybe ID :)
3. We'd find a hotel with a meeting room and everyone would have
their own table/space.
4. We'd have a dressing/ try on room.
5. Everyone is responsible for their own items.
6. Not sure if we'd do it in one or two days. Depends on feedback I
get.
7. There would be a flat fee for having your "space", it would
depend on the room cost and how people would be interested.
8. Payment/ and commitment would need to be made to us 30 days prior
to the event, so if we didn't get enough interest to pay for the
meeting room, we'd have time to cancel it.
We just feel that sometimes it just easier trying and seeing items in
person, rather than on-line where sometimes you can't be certain what
you are getting until it arrives.

Hey everyone,
My name is Robbie Wilson & I am with a non-profit organization called Queen for a Day. The goal of this non-profit is to raise the self-esteem & self-confidence of young girls with cancer (or other illnesses). We do this by hosting tea parties at hospitals where the girls receive a make-over & tiaras (donated by titleholders or pageant companies across the country)! The girls have their pictures taken with a title holder to commemorate this special day!
Since we are a non-profit we rely heavily on donations & we are running EXTREMELY low on tiaras! The National Headquarters has had to supply tiaras for 19 parties in the last 3 months & it has taken a heavy toll on our tiaras. The final crown has a news group, if you contact the director, I am sure she will let you join her group. You can send out the information to all contestants that belong to the group which will probably get tons of response and reach final crown contestants that are not in the NW as well as ones that are.

What if you one of you set up and maintained a yahoo group that only those directors you invited were involved? Or something along these lines.
Not only could it be for bad checks, but bad sportsmanship and past due "balances owing". The person would have to have postive proof, not just heresay or being out to get another mom.
I am just a pageant mom, but being aware of some of these things, could possibly help avoid trouble in the future and keep good systems here in the NW.

As a parent, and not a director, I would suggust that at least 10 days before the pageant, do not take checks from anyone. Accept only paypal, cash and money orders.
Yes, it is irritating as a pageant mom to have to pay other than with a check, but Mom's need to understand why.
As always, a few rotten apples spoil it for all.
And yes, I feel that you pageant directors should warn each other.

I too have been on both sides as a director and parent.As a
parent I only pay for pageants in cash. As a director I only accept sponsor checks,money orders,and cashiers checks.
At the door it's CASH ONLY!I feel that your suggestion about having a list of bad checks is excellent. I have been to many pageants where parents have stopped payment on checks because their child lost!!What poor sportsmanship! We all want our children to win,but they are not going to win them all.If she has several bad checks I suggest that director take them to a collection agency and get her money.She worked hard to put her pageant together and those parents still owe the money.So I suggest she not take checks from walk-ins because I have witnessed this many times that's the main one who will put on the stop payment.

As a director and parent of a pageant contestant I have been on both sides. I respect the fact that most directors do not accept checks and can understand why. As a director I only allow checks as a deposit prior to the pageant but now that has even become a problem. Its not even just bad checks, its poor sportsmanship type behavior and bashing that is another concern of mine.
I know as a director I try my best to make everyone happy, which is not possible but I try. I take it as a personal matter , not just business because I truley care how people feel afterward and that can make it harder. Directors have to work hard to make the pageant a good experience for everyone mainly because thats our job as a director and what people paid entry fees to experience. But there is also the worry about being bashed and our reputations and its really too bad that people handle things the way they do sometimes. Yet these people can go from pageant to pageant without any repercussions from how they behaved or what happened at previous pageants whether it be bad checks or poor sportsmanship. If they knew directors were able to give feedback to one another they may be more careful .
Pageant contestants often voice their opinions to one another about a pageant experience, I feel that directors and pageant related business should have a way of sharing information in a professional manner. It is only fair. That is just my opinion however, and having a negative experience has alot to do with my opinion at this time. It would be interesting to see how other directors and related businesses feel about this as well . :)

Hi! I am looking for feedback from directors and parents alike. I am saddened that a local director had to take public a non-payment on a check. Personally - I have tried to learn from these situations and I do not take checks for that very reason - but I know that some directors still do because they are tring to be nice. So my question is this - what should be done about this? Should directors communicate with each other when someone has not paid a debt? Should other directors then not allow participation in their system based on non-payment to another system? Just kinda wondering what everyones opinion is about this - from directors and parents... I anticipate there might be a difference of opinion between the two "groups" but - I don't know - maybe not.. let me know what you think.

I would suggest that if you haven't already, join some Yahoo pageant groups. Just do a search. There are WA, OR and NW pageant groups. You are bound to find someone you know.

The thing is, I think us NW Mom's take things to the directors directly, not hide behind a computer screen like the CA Mom's do.
I know with us, if I don't like a pageant, we just don't do it next time around if I don't get a satisfactory answer from the director.
If someone wants my opinion, I will give based only on my experiences. People need to make up there own minds.

As a pageant mom and director I have met some wonderful people and they have all been supportive and kind. Even those not happy with the results of a pageant have handled it in a respectful way without bashing. :)

Agreed. Isn't it awful how some of the moms on the CA board go on and on about things that you know are probably not the whole truth. Thank goodness most of the pageant people in the NW know how to behave and are trully supportive of each other. We have lots to be thankful for.

It always has such postive postings, unlike the 35575 West Coast board, where the complaints go on for weeks :(

I hope to see you guys again very soon. Rosa is such a pretty little thing. I love hearing Amanda and isn't it amazing how different girls of approxamitly the same age can be???? I did not get a pic. Wish I had.

Thank you so Denise, my kids really had a good time especially with Rosa's first time back in a looooong time, lol! Wasn't that so funny! OMG, I hope someone took a picture, I couldn't get to my camera fast enough! What a really fun group of girls, they were all truly having a good time together. Congrat's again to your Stormy, please pass on many congratulation hugs from us three!!!
