Good Question! I think these next couple years is high time to recognize the paraiah's of the Hall - the old-school relief pitcher. Eck makes only the third reliever to be inducted along with real old timer Hoyt Wilhelm, and the Mustachioed One - Rollie Fingers. It can be argued that Eck is the first of what you'd consider the modern closer - Mr. Lights Out Ninth Inning Guy. But before there was Eck and Hoffman and Gagne there was the Fingers generation of 7th, 8th or 9th guys - whenever there was a late inning rally, these guys came in to shut it down, and in so doing helped pave the way for the modern closer. There is a clear group of these guys that, along with Fingers, were dominant in this role throughout the 70s and 80s, and that I think warrant some serious Hall consideration, and that would be: Bruce Sutter, Lee Smith, Goose Gossage and the late Dan Quisenberry.
