I find your assertion that a dual language society is a troublesome one to be true, and the less like Canada we are, the better. Where you fail, oh JUNG, is in your foolish belief that today�s immigrants should simply take it upon themselves to learn English. Yes, they should, and in the past, they usually did, but the very reason you have a topic to talk about this week is because the immigrants of today are largely not learning English as their primary language. I believe that language helps a society form much of its common bond, and without a single language, there becomes a fissure, a lack of cohesion. I can only site as an example yet again, Canada, specifically Quebec. Primarily French speaking Quebec is the main reason for the two official languages up in Molson country, and the Quebecois have threatened to leave their union many times.
Passing an official language into law is the only way to set the proper precedent while it is available to be set. I�m not suggesting that the police pull over people and quiz them on their vocabulary, but there needs to be an overall understanding that there is but one proper language to conduct your business with if you want to be an American.
