Ok, I am in almost complete agreement with this article. I was recently speaking with a friend of mine who teaches in the Milwaukee Public School Disctrict. First of all, we know how poor this system is to begin with, so please set that aspect aside for now. The real issue comes in the fact that this person had roughly 30% of her students who could only speak Spanish, 30% who spoke only Vietnamese, and the remaining 40% (roughly) who could speak English. The students who could not speak the common language did nothing but cry and become frustrated. While I truly feel bad for these students and wish them nothng but the best for the future, something must be done. My friend is not trained to teach English as a second language and has her hands full trying to balance the class. I agree with Jung, we need education to teach immigrants English. But, it is up to them to learn a new language, not us.
