My name is Lauressa Thomas, and I am a Senior at GHS this year. So First I want to say thank-you for making this site. It is pretty cool, having a site for GHS! Then next, I want to know some of the old traditions that classes "back in the day" had that we have kind of gotten away from. I know that a lot of parents or GHS alumni like to see some of their old traditions brought back...things have changed ALOT and as Student Body President, our council wants some new and exciting ideas that our public would like to see at GHS, so if anyone has any ideas, please contact me. lauressa_jeanette33@hotmail.com And yes, our football team are the New COnference (southern division Champs) YAY! If anyone wants to know, we play this Friday, November 8th at Harbison Field at 7:00. It is the first round of play-offs and we play Higley. We'd love the extra support for the boys if anyone can make it!
Thank-you!

Hi Lauressa--

First -- you are very welcome. I have really enjoyed establishing and running The Tiger Den web site -- and I am pleased to see that younger GHS students are finding this site and enjoying it. There will come a day when I will have to turn the site over to a younger generation -- hopefully that is yet many years away.

As to the old traditions from "back in the days," well, I don't know -- I'm sure some of the "traditions" weren't exactly legal.... LOL!!

Seriously, I hope you get a lot of responses for this thread you started. It has the potential to generate A LOT of great comments and stories.

The one tradition I remember was the Thanksgiving Day Globe-Miami football game that stopped just before my freshman year. I understand why it was stopped, but it was a huge tradition for many years. See Ricardo Lucero's recollection of the games on The Tiger Den web site to get an idea of how rough things were.

Student Body President, eh? Impressive. Stay in touch. I am curious about the Papoose web site . I removed the link to it because nothing was being done on it. Do you know anything about it?

Thank YOU for the update on the Southern Division Champions!!!! I'd love to go to Friday's game, but I doubt if I will be able to make it. Let us know when and where the next round is being played. You know, in our Senior year, we had a perfect record, but it was upside down -- we were 0 and 10, pretty embarassing! So I am excited to hear how well Globe has done this year.

Traditions, Karl? Didn't they all involve the old CCC camp in the Pinals? Bob

Most, if not all, Bob. And other remote places. Then again, many of the "traditional" activities in those remote locations also often fell under the "not exactly legal" category....?

But being the sweet and innocent type, I wouldn't have any real first-hand knowledge of those activities -- all I have is second-hand accounts, i.e., heresay....

To tell ya the truth the "traditions" (I'm assuming they would be under the "not exactly legal" category) at Pipeline, Chinatown, CC Camp and other places, still pretty much go on out there. LOL. Other then most of those places, every cop in town knows about, so there are some new spots too...not that I would know either, hah! But, yes the Tigers Beat Higley 40-7 and they play Willcox, once again on Friday, November 15th at 5:00 pm at Mesa Community College.

Apparently I was the good one of this alumni group and I spent time doing the actual legal tradition stuff!!! It's been only 10 years so I don't know what's the same & what's changed. We of course started off our freshman year with the traditional white washing of the G & painting of the M. For us pep assemblies & spirit yells were really big. FLOAT BUILDING FLOAT BUILDING FLOAT BUILDING!!!!! I have to say that this is by far one of the most memorable expierences of most everyone in my classes memories! We had the best time and my class ('92 of course) Had the best record (2nd freshman & a sweep for 1st the next 3 years!!) Huge on mechanical moving floats. It's a great way to meet people in your class that you've never really hung out with before. There's always the copper kettle madness! Ask Mrs. Hunt for a copy of the '92 yearbook. It was a 75th anniversary edition and there are lots of good ideas in there for you. We researched back to the early 1900's. There is also a little room right next to the auditorium filled with yearbooks & memorablia that will help[ you as well. You'll need to Ask Mrs. Hunt for permission though.

Good luck and email me if you have any more questions!!

Have fun,

There is probably at least two categories of tradtions we could discuss here: School-related and non-school related. Non-school related would be the events at the CCC camp and other locals, mentioned elsewhere, or cruising Broad street on Friday and Saturday night (or any other night we could get away with it.) Cruising Broad street wasn't much. Just back and forth, between "The Turnaround" near Upton's on the south end of Broad and the General Tire shop, Richfield gas station, or the garage on the north end. For variation, go all the way to the underpass and return on Willow. Or you could always go over the hill to Miami and cruise there for a while. (But we know all the action was really in downtown Globe!)

For school-related, I always enjoyed the "Roman Cones" baked by the Latin club. Basically just cake mix baked in a sugar ice cream cone and topped with frosting and other cake decorations. Any flavor of cake mix could be used. Made for a great little snack.

As I was waxing nostalgic while flipping through an old Wigwam, I did come up with a worthwhile--and legal--tradition of old: Sadie Hawkins Day and Dance, based on the old Little Abner comic strip. Do they still observe that tradition? Basically, that was the day the girls could ask the guys for dates and dances, and for the dance, everyone was supposed to dress up as hill billies.

Hope this helps a little bit....
