Go Tigers!
To our GHS Historians... What State Championships have the Tiger's Won? I know of the 1967 State Basketball Championship (defeated Aqua Fria at the Coliseum in PHX). I believe Globe was a powerhouse in the 50's?
Karl, I tip my hat to you for your work on the website - thanks, Dan

Thanks to Ghost of Globe High Past? What era of GHS history do you represent? I have three brothers that graduated in the late 1940's and early 1950's. Matter of fact, one of my brothers named his son "Max" because of the influnce of Coach Spilsbury.

I was at Globe in the late 40s and early 50s. I played for
Max the 2 years he was at Globe. He made Frank Kush look like
a "wuss!" He was fair, but he had his "favorites" too. I had
no problems with him.

Thanks Spike for your response...
Maybe you recall Keith, Kenneth, and Richard (Dick) Blair. They were in Globe in your era. Dick lives in Globe and is still in the Education/Coaching business at a local Charter school.
Thanks again for your information about the Championships.

WOW! I'm just the happiest mother in the world! I was there to see the globe tigers take the championship! I'm from the class of 79 and now my son will be leaving globe high this year 2003 but he will leave behind the best memories a kid can have and has a ring to show it, not mentioning all the news paper clippings! My son was named All-State 1st team runningback, 1st team linebacker and much more! We can hardly wait to take championship in basketball and baseball! Yes! He does play all sports and is very good on all sports! Not because I'm his mom but he's got talent! It's in his blood!

I went to watch the Tigers last night, 2-11-2003, against Queen Creek. No match. Globe is tough well balanced, nice bunch of good athletes. I sat with my old 8th Grade basketball Coach, and one of the '67 Championship Assitants, Gary Alexander. I had a great time watching the Tigers, and visiting with "Coach." The Tigers "opened a can of whoop-tiger" and beat the Bulldogs 93-49.

Well dagnabit, Spike. It's not my fault they don't publish 3A high school playoff results in communities south of the Gila River. Half the time I can't even get the results of the ASU games because they spend all their sportscast hyping on the over rated UofA Wildcats. It's like the Treaty of Hidalgo never happened!!! Sometimes I feel like I am in another country.... I can't even get updates from the East Valley Tribune anymore....

Besides, somewhere above, I believe I asked for assistance on what the playoffs are looking like -- i.e., who and where and when.....

Besides, I am a WEBMASTER, not a sports writer.....

Anyhow--

Ok, Ok, I'll give you as much help as I can. They don't
cover 3A sports any better up here in the "Hotbed" of the
nation's unrest. All they want to cover is 5A or 4A.
Globe defeated Queen Creek 95-49 and Safford 91-72.
They are now 28-0. Rio Rico is next.

I will agree with you there. When you say "Hotbed" of the nation's unrest. Can I assume you are speaking about the good old valley of the sun!

I e-mailed the sports editor of the East Valley Tribune and asked why they hadn't done any stories on Globe's 3A undefeated Basketball team and he replyed thay they only sell about 3 papers in Globe. Of course this ticked me off, so I sent off another message to Mr. Slim Smith (ssmith@aztrib.com) and told him that a worthy story should be printed no mater what kind of sales it generates, and he replied: "VAST majority of our readers have VERY LIMITED interest in Globe sports. That's really what it comes down to, providing info the majority of our readers have interest in".

If any of you Globites living down here in the valley would like to e-mail this guy back I think it would be a good thing to let him know where our interest is!

Just saw this crap in an old post. Over-rated Arizona Wildcats? You need a reality check, Foerster. Did you even go to a D-1 university, or just to that glorified high school in Tempe? By now, I guess, you have assimilated the whipping the nation's No.1 team put on the Scum Devils on Tempe's home court last weekend. If you want to talk over-rated, see Tempe's African-born center, Ike Idougo or some other series of unpronounceable letters. Despite the Arizona Repulsive (aka Republic) pre-game hype, Arizona native Channing Frei of The University completely outplayed him! Tempe has some football history with Mr. Frank Kush and all, but basketball, forget it! Ernie Kent, the Scummies coach, could not carry the briefcase of UofA's Hall of Fame coach, Mr. Lute Olson. I don't generally bag on Scum Devils from Globe because blood (Globe bonds) is thicker than water, but you started this crap, Mr. Webmaster, by calling the Wildcats over-rated. Who's Number One, Babeeee? Diaper dandies! etc. In the interest of standing united, let's keep college mickeymouse off this board and bag on the Miami Vandals whenever we feel mean-spirited. End of rant.

I along with Karl have tried to find articles of interest in small town activities...tempe, mesa, chandler, gilbert and phoenix are also made up of small town people who moved from a small town, as well snowbirds and people wanting to escape the winter cold from back east..there are not enough, if not any, news stories about small town america unless its a most wanted fugitive....I have written to all the news stations about doing a story on the Tigers and have never received any reply back..how rude...the only station that does air all sports is cox cable channel 9... I think there should be space in the newspaper to print news outside of the phoenix metro area..cuz some of us still enjoy the memories we had as kids and to keep up with how the small town is doing along with its old and new citizens......I was bragging at work about how our globe team had done in the football and basketbal season..and she asked me, "are you still in high school and dont you have anything better to do?" I just smiled and told her I am very proud of where I went to school and of our small town, and support them in good and bad times..because those kids that play and work hard are sons and daughters of your friends and thru-out the years...I felt sorry for her, because she was just never happier to leave high school and leave it all behind. but in the end, we always go back to that place we once called home...so maybe one day we may get a reporter who will take an interest in small towns and not tape all the violence and garbage that happens in this big city they call phoenix...

Hey Karl....Good news. The Globe Tiger heavyweight on the wrestling team won the state championship Saturday evening down in Phoenix. He is a junior by the name of Chet Huelskamp. Also Nate Lockard who wrestles at 215lbs. took third. Way to go wrestlers.
