Hi John, below is what the accident report says on XH536:

After takeoff, radar surveillance of the a/c was handed over to Southern Radar and at 14.48 pilot warned them that he would shortly be descending for low level. At 15.01 as a/c descended below 8000' it faded from the radar screen.

A/C is believed to have been seen crossing the coast near Porthcawl shortly afterwards, below cloud, and was later seen near the turning point. A/C reported its position as Low Level Turning Point 8. Nothing more was heard from the a/c and it was subsequently found crashed near the summit of Fan Bwlch Chwyth. All crew members were killed.

At the time of the accident, weather was misty with cloud covering the hills above 1400'. Hazy white cloud tended to merge with the snow covered hilltops.

ROOT CAUSE: pilot failed to comply with A.S Instructions in that he encountered IMC at low level and did not climb to minimum safe quadrantal flight level.

AGGRAVATING CONDITIONS: 'Whiteout' conditions

Wreckage found by SAR helicopter 12/02/66

regards
Chrisj
