John,

I have been making turtle shell slates in this manner for a while. What I do is get a piece of glass/crystal/slate and cut it to fit the turtle shell. I do not use a dowel/washer/ like some would with pot calls as it is not functional. But what I do is inlay or build a ledge from the shell itself. If at all possible I use a round piece of glass for both top and bottum. Inlaying both, if you will, into the shell. The depth you put the lower sound board, as well as the shell size, and striking surface, they will all play a role in the over all the pitch/sound. Tinker with this idea. It is best if you have your own cutter to cut circles as there is no standard glass size you will need as all shells are different. From time to time you will have to cut the lower soundboard in more of an egg shape to allow a good fit. I hope this helps if you need anything let me know.
