Hi Chip, I got my first call completed yesterday. Poplar long box with a cedar top. It's raspy like an old hen on one side and sounds less raspy on the other side. I tuned it without any chalk to start with until it started to sound. It is quite loud, more so than a couple I own. I do have a question. I drilled the inside with a 5/8 forstner bit for the bottom followed by a 3/4 for the top half. When I went to smooth the two surfaces I never did get them matched due to the flexing of the sides in the vise. I thought I could drill he sides before I cut it out or just use 1 bit say a 7/8 and then tune it as necessary. Do you think that would work. Suggestion? I have to say thank you again. Everything you have said has been right on.
