My husband wasn't able to get off work - he was told he had to be in the office first thing in the morning. Oh well.

My son drove me. I felt a little bad about it cuz he'd been up all night at the studio working on a project that had to be done, has a nasty flu, and the temp on the bank nearby read 5 degrees. He did it though - stood out in that cold with me for over 2 hours - whadda a trooper!

That's right - I did it!! I STOOD in that freezing cold, holding my sign that read "Education, NOT Racism." I thank God for allowing me to do this, I thank all of you for your good wishes and prayers. I met tenoso and her husband - they are such a cute couple and seem like good people. I also met Brian (aka: "retirethechief") and he was very nice. It always makes me feel good when I meet a good white person (I know that sounds strange, but it's true) -- gives me hope.

There were about 50 people protesting. With the exception of maybe 4 of us, it appeared the rest were Indian. There were NO pro-chief protesters present, and the board members got a good look at all of us as they entered into the meeting. Five at a time were allowed to go into the meeting with their signs (I didn't go in, but tenoso did). One sign in particular I really liked. It was a massive canvas with the Illini logo on it - the caption read "What if it was YOUR religion?"

The American Indian Center here has gotten involved -- they were very instrumental in staging this protest. They are planning on contacting the HoChunk nation for some help in March, when the final decision will be made. They are hoping to get some buses for a caravan to travel downstate, and they are planning on holding a candlelight vigil the night before the meeting on March 11. If I had the money, I'd pay for every Indian to be there. How I'd LOVE to see hundreds of Indians show up in protest.

When we returned home, my husband's work van was gone, but he was home. He's been laid off work. It's going to be hard for him to get another job. I hope he has better luck than my son in finding employment.

We're going to have to make some cuts around here. Cable TV for sure (I don't care for TV anyway). I might have to give up my Internet service though. Not sure yet, but if I do hopefully it won't be for too long.

Kathy
