Subject: In the Navy

My son just wasn't getting anywhere here, so he enlisted in the Navy. I'm not a big fan of the military, but my father was in the Navy during WWII and he really loved the Navy.

He scored well on the ASVAB and just passed his physical. He signed up for Air Search & Rescue. He'll go through boot camp here at Great Lakes, then on to Pensacola for flight training, then on to San Diego from swim training, then off to some island for survival training......um okay. It's really extreme training, but my son has always loved extreme physical challenges. He really wants to see if he has what it takes, and I suspect he does. The training and the job is dangerous, but I like that it's about rescue.

He leaves for boot camp in two weeks. I've prepared myself and my son for this from the beginning. I knew he wouldn't be mine forever. It's going to be so hard to let go, even though I'm proud of him and want him to go. I just feel like I'm saying good-bye forever to the little boy I knew.

I can still picture him around the age of 2 - running around the house in his red footie pajamas with a towel pinned to his shoulders so he could "fly."

I realize our troops are out there risking and fighting for their lives, and I pray for them. May I ask that you pray or send good thoughts for my son too?

Kathy
