Well now, DJ -- you've gone and done it again. In the past, there have been numerous times when I could completely relate to what you've just said (especially when it comes to your husband and son).

It's now 4:00 am and I have been up all night -- how I miss the Kathy I used to be. I used to be strong, independent, and vibrant. I had the bull by the horns, but it seems somewhere along the line I was gored when I wasn't looking.

The DJ you once knew is still in there -- maybe you just need to find her again. I think it's wonderful that you've decided to take this first step. There is nothing wrong with seeing a professional for a medical problem, even if it is mental/emotional. Would you feel ashamed to see a doctor for high blood pressure? Panic and emotional disorders have an old-fashioned stigma attached, but they are no different -- instead of cardiology based, it's neurology based.

A friend once told me that going to see a "shrink" is like going to visit a really smart friend -- only they won't say anything stupid. When I first became ill, I also became very depressed (who wouldn't?). I found a good psychologist, and she helped me cope with long-term debilitating illness.

I'm a member of a private board comprised of people (mostly women) who are dealing with emotional problems, including panic disorder and depression. I've known them a few years now, and I'm very close with many of them -- in the past, they've saved my hiney more than once. The woman who runs the board is incredible, and the outpouring of love and support to any who join is amazing. If you are interested, I can send you the address of the site via email. Maybe they can also help you through this, as many of them have been exactly where you are now.

Either way, I am happy you are taking this first step toward regaining yourself.

Kathy
