I'm glad to see people posting here again, it can get a bit crazy at the other board sometimes.

I agree with you, extremes of belief can be a negative force. The Muslims here who support Al Qaeda (and there are quite a few here) state openly their intention that Islam should prevail. One man here, who has been closely associated with a London mosque and is known to be connected with (and indeed happy to talk about) the higher echelons of Al Qaeda, has stated on British television that Britain will be converted to Islam, by force if necessary, and he sees nothing wrong with that.
The hatred brewing now in Iraq is going to have devastating consequences, I think, not least for the Iraqi people. Today is the first day when there have been quotes from senior (unnamed) Commanders stating that the war is not going well, and that they have fears for how things will turn out. One of our soldiers made a comparison with Ireland, which I think was not unreasonable, as half the Irish people in Northern Ireland persistently say they want to remain British, and welcome our troops. The others of course very strongly in the opposite direction, and of course it is a situation that has gone on for years, I fear it could in Iraq. I don't know if you are getting the news footage there of ordinary Iraqis pledging to defeat us, expressing their hatred for Britain and America. Justifiably, as they don't feel they are being liberated, but attacked. These clearly aren't people who are frightened of Saddam Hussein and therefore only speaking to protect themselves, they really hate what we are doing. And the situation there is just turning into more and more of a mess. To have so many troops so demoralised at this point, and realising the scale of the Iraqi resistance and loathing they are encountering, and to have so many Iraqi refugees fleeing Baghdad and heading south, knowing there is no food or provision for them there, just because of our bombing, is a terrible thing. We might ultimately "liberate" them, but at what a price. And a huge number of them are not going to thank us.

I don't know, it's pretty hard to take him seriously! :(
I think he is a pawn, but a wilful one. A comment on the frontpage of one of our newspapers today was that from his jubilant expression, he seems to be enjoying this.

but as a person, some have called him a "dry drunk," by which I think they mean he has a lot of internal confusion and hostility, and being no longer able to "medicate" it with alcohol, he "intoxicates" himself with the crusade mentality you are describing above .... pretty scary stuff if true
>:o(((.

I think he is a confused individual, the not very bright, overgrown boy always trying to impress and out-do Dad, is the impression I have. And yes, I think he probably does "intoxicate" himself with his belief in his own chosen role, he certainly seems to thrive on the position he is in now.

There are I know a very great number of Christians opposed to this war, and of course, Muslims. The usual justification for war - that it is to free, or to defend land or people just does not apply to the way we have approached this situation. It's very hard to believe, watching these bombing raids, what we are doing. I find it quite horrific. I hope ultimately some good in the region may result, but at the moment I see no sign of it.

Think I'll stop rambling and go to bed:(

Bella
