Subject: engine sputtering
In reply to: scott 's message, "need for this type forum for all car problems" on 21:11:55 11/28/02 Thu

I live in Japan and I drive a '98 Toyota "Raum" (a very mini-mini van), which is having engine problems. The car only has about 33,000 miles on it, and it has been regularly maintained by the Toyota dealer.

Three months ago the engine suddenly began to hesitate and sputter, and the engine lamp would flash on. The dealer changed the plugs, and everything seemed OK.

The other day I had the car in for the 5-year manditory Japanese inspection, and ever since, the engine has been giving me the same sort of hesitation/spluttering problems, mainly when climbing hills and quickly accelerating -- basically doing anything that stresses the engine.

The dealer tried replacing the plugs wires and the filters, as well as spraying something inside the engine to clean it, but they cannot fix the problem.

I can still drive the car, but anytime I put the least strain on the engine, it hiccups or splutters, and the engine briefly light flashes on.

Any ideas what's going on?
