Subject: M3 engine failure - any early signs

Hi! I was delighted to find this forum. My husband bought an M3 (SMG) in June 2002. He broke it in relatively gently and does not put many miles on the car. In August when we drove 100 miles to another city (certainly not a long drive; on open highway, keeping under 90) the oil light went on. He found the oil down over 3 quarts. The oil on the dipstick looked terrible. Now in November the oil light has come on again, and the oil is, once again, very low. Is this normal? Does the oil on the M3 have to be checked more frequently than, say, my E55 Mercedes? I've just learned about the M3 engine failures and am obviously very concerned. So far there doesn't seem to be any strange noise in the 2k - 4k rpm range (as heard by some drivers just prior to catastrophe), but he does say that shifting in the low gears has been rougher of late. Any thoughts? Thanks.
