Subject: M3 Enngine Failure-Any early signs
In reply to: Sue 's message, "M3 engine failure - any early signs" on 14:13:40 11/24/02 Sun

Sue-You don't indicate how many miles it took to use the 3 qts. or so...very important. BMW has always been pretty cagy when it comes to oil consumption. They're likely to tell you that 1 qt. in 1,000 mi. is not excessive. Anything more than that and I'd be concerned. It really is important to check oil level, preferably at every stop for gas. Wait at least 1 min. after shutting the engine off. Use only the specified oil: CASTROL TWS 10W60. While BMW requires that the oil be changed at 15,000 mi., many of us enthusiasts heartily suggest that the oil and filter be changed at least every 7,500 mi. Even tho you will be charged for it at around $8-$10/liter, the benefit far outweighs the cost.
Regards, Stan
