This is really quite sad, especially for Jason in his captaincy year, the McKenzies and Spanky who have been making a massive effort for the club and for JT who, over a number of years on and off the field, has acted above and beyond the call of duty often.

I really have no right to make any comment on this situation, as in the middle of last week, I agreed to play for Strathearn when they need me on Sundays for the rest of this season. There are a number of reasons for this which I am not going to go into here. I know I will not enjoy it as much as the crack with Spanky and the McKenzies and will really miss playing with some of our guys. I care so much (maybe too much) about AVCC and I hope it can limp on and, if it does, I will return to the fold next season but the tone of Martin’s post is not encouraging.

My observations on the problems of the club would be :

1. Do we not have 14 for next weeks game, so it is not doom and gloom every week, and did we not have 11 at practice?

2. How many players from other clubs have played for us this year?

3. My entirely personal view is that I really do not think the Secretary of our club should have another club as his priority and wish that this had been disclosed at the AGM at which point I would have raised a number of problems I feel that it brings. I feel it was a material omission for it not to be mentioned at that time.

4. We have been through player numbers peaks and troughs in the past. Even in the darkest days in the past we didn’t quit and walk away from it but instead toughed it out and eventually emerged stronger and with an abundance of players. These things are cyclical and to be talking about folding hands at this stage amazes me. We have seen worse times than this, believe me. I was never ‘fed up of phoning around every week’ in 11 years but as I said, I cared whether Almond Valley was there tomorrow. Personally, in a foolish romantic idyllic dream, I hoped one day that the various offspring of Christie, Yellowley, Hyde, Mitchell, Fyfe et al would all be playing together for Almond Valley one day. Looks pretty unlikely now.

Good luck guys, I hope the club can be kept going and feel free to call me any week that you are stuck and I will play if I am not playing elsewhere or busy.

I feel like I have just got divorced! Keep smiling.
