Okay my friend...you forgot some high points of our trip. At least, they made my day.

First was my ability to make it aboard without collapsing under the strain of war chest. Then successfully finding a nice spot to place this mobile tackle store...even if I did have to move yours. You sure got a big bag for a guy with so little terminal tackle. You must be planning for the future.

The guy who talks like he can breathe through his skin actually remained fairly quiet on this trip...of course, everybody on board was ignoring this chap which may have had something to do with it. It’s amazing how some people can babble on and on without ever actually saying anything. If the fella said anything interesting, intelligent or memorable...I can’t recall it. I swear, this guy has watched too many fishing shows.

While I would sum my friend Gaffed up as the ideal fishing buddy who enthusiastically absorbs tons of info from the anglers on the boat...it is his facial expressions that gets me. First cast with a small baitcaster and the guy positively glowed. It was like watching a kid opening a Christmas present to find his first BB gun. When someone does somethin’ dumb, he has a sarcastic glance that would intimidate Dennis Miller, the king of sarcasm. When he sees something new that he’s never seen before (in this case, an assortment of plastics, plugs and iron lures) his eyebrows climb on top of his head and he asks more questions than a two year toddler. Yeah...my friend entertains without saying a word.

I really appreciated the fact that Gaffed DIDN’T ask me about my absence from Allcoast or the stupid posts that caused me to walk away from the cyber world during the holidays and focus on real life. The bass bite was very touchy and for awhile (okay, the first half of the day) I had white line fever running up and down the spine of my black Albecrombe jacket. I finally realized that it wasn’t my choice of plastics, position on the boat or choice of hook size causing me to smell of skunk...it was my attitude. I wasn’t EXPECTING any bites so I wasn’t getting bit.

I started chanting...bite...bite...bite... about a billion times. Soon enough the nibbles came and kept coming. Ahhhh...mind over fish matter. I managed a couple checkerboards but being that they were potential breeders, sent them back to educate their young-uns about the hazards of tangling with Tackle Whores. Gaffed started catching fish on a pole better suited to albacore so I urged him to grab a Shimano Convergence/ Calcutta combo with 10lb test. He was hanging fish in no time and I could tell he was hooked on light tackle for good.

Medium Al, a DP regular landed a nettable grumpy that took JP honors using a small pink leadhead and worm combo. Gotta get some pink now. It was funny, there was one guy on the boat who was truly huge. He sorta adopted the port corner and leaned on his elbows, placing is ample posterior well behind him. Had to be careful walking towards that aft corner...the guys ass had it’s own gravity. I feared Gaffed lacked the leverage to escape it’s evil grasp, lest he venture too close to the portal of this black hole. This big ole fella would occasionally walk away, leaving his rod in the corner to serve as sentry and protector of his prized stern spot.
Gaffed mentioned to me that he wanted to move Jabba’s rod and fish the corner, I said “Just do it.”
Something prevented him from doing so though...perhaps the threat of being bear hugged by the beastly behemoth. Later on, I found the rod again resting there in the corner...it’s rotund owner nowhere in sight.
Figuring my ticket cost as much as his did, I moved the sentry rod up rail and slid into the vacant corner. I caught almost all my fish there. Gaffed eventually pulled up next to me and we nailed em together, side by side...all under the watchful eye of Big Daddy Blackhole. Sometimes ya just gotta force people to be fair, ya know?

Another thing Gaffed left out of his report was the way he generously paid my tab while I was off sawing logs in the salon during the ride back. I was awaken to the sound of the deckhand yellin’ for folks to pay the galley tabs but when I said, “How much on 11?” the deckie glances at Tom and say, “Your buddy took care of it.”

Nothing I can say about Tom except that he’s the best. If you get a chance to share a rail with him...do it. You’ll find he’s the type of guy that makes any day on the water better...whether the fish bite or not. Good company is hard to find these days...look no further. Thanks for the fun Gaffed...we gotta go again soon. Hope a few others join us next time.
