Subject: I AM THE COD FATHER...

I HATE ROCKCOD. There is not one good thing about them; some argue that they taste good, i will grant them this, then give them a bite of my grilled wahoo steak, and we can compare.

I just got back from crewing a day and half rockcod trip to San Nick on the Pacifica. The boat was sold out with 22 anglers. We ran all night and started fishing on Wednesday morning. We fished mainly shallow water all morning. It was just like every rockcod trip ever was and ever will be: boring and stupid.

Rule #1: There is nothing special about Lingcod, so don't
pee all over yourself when you get one.

Rule#2: You don't need a gaff for the stupid 6lb fish that you landed on an iron and 30lb line, so don't call for me like you have a real fish (tuna).

Overall the fishing was good, with fair numbers of reds and lings (????) The weather was outstanding. Light breeze, no swell, perfect current.

In the afternoon we poked around the backside of the island and then to the east end. Lots of birds, and squid but not to many more of those wonderful illusive cod. We anchored up off the sandspit for dinner and to give the pro (me) a chance to cut a few fish. I was cutting full speed while the squid came up under the boat thicker than i have ever seen before. I mean, just a mass of this glowing squish, surging around the boat.

We got back to the dock at Long Beach Marina Sportfishing at 0300 this morning, with limits of rockcod. Not much sleep for the deckcrew (me) this trip, and not much forecasted anytime soon with Y2K coming and the lights about to shut down.

Oh, yes, one more thing... I try to make a point not to slam anglers, as they are my bread and butter, but...

DON'T TIP ME ONE DOLLAR...

Deckhands work VERY hard to ensure that you enjoy yourself, and that you catch fish, and get them home in a consumable form. A one or two dollar tip is a slap in the face and is not appropriate. I would rather you not tip me, than drop a buck in the jar. Just remember what you tipped your waiter last time you were out (provided that he did an adequate job)? 15%. The same is appropriate for you crew. My job here is done.

Sorry if i ranted and raved there a little. I really love you all, and can't wait for my next rockcod trip. Woooohoooo.
