The "leaders", whatever that means, must be banking on the bygone theory that lays some claim to the idea that "any port in the storm will do." Taking a wild long shot based on desperation is sheer folly. A giant lava lamp is not the key to revitalizing the once popular attraction that has faded. Time changed Soap Lake, Soap Lake remained stagnant; refused to change. Consequently, they were left in the dust, the lure for healing waters slipped away when penicillin and Las Vegas arrived on the scene. Small towns are known for their small-mindedness. With no term limits on leaders, a strangle hold prevails. Those who desire to control what is to their benefit instead of what could be a benefit to all is what holds small towns back in the woods till they become a deserted pinpoint on the map. Think on this historical factoid.

I am from Tampa, Florida and currently residing in Auckland, New Zealand.
The Giant Lava Lamp proposed for Soap Lake, Washington is a great idea. That will now be that beacon that summons all things in hippie-dom. I can see Grateful Dead-heads coming by the thousands. Peace & harmony will reign in Soap Lake like never before....and hopefully locals will jump on the bandwagon and embrace the freedom loving stoners. The local infrastructure will benefit greatly from this. There'll be a Woodstock ambience. Can you smell the patchouli?
I see bumper snickers stating, "The Burg with the Herb! A Maharaji Yoga-ish type will re-locate there to seek followers. Too bad George Harrison isn't around to enjoy it. I say get the Wizard of Christchurch, NZ to move there, too. You could always get Terry Zimmer of Tampa, Florida to contact Pink Floyd and ask them to come. Also invite freedom-loving Member of Paliament, Nandor Tzandos from Wellington, NZ. Soap Lake would absolutely rock! Bob Denver (from 1960's TV Hit, Gilligan's Island) could be the Mayor. Groovy, Man!
Peace, Love, Dove,
Steve

I bet if Timothy, the King of LSD, was still alive he would have to agree with you. To really create that feeling and real essance of community wholeness and unity, everyone could get into that altered state of conciousness called Alpha, Zen or High on a pencil lid. Everyone could just drop out, burn out, groove on the lava lamp and forget about working. Now that is a real unprogressive thought! To hell with the economy, back to the 60s, act like flower children who lived for peace, love, sex and drugs and create a colony of Mary Janes at Soap Lake. Have you considered a brain transplant?
