"Nick…?" Randy struggled to lick her parched lips.

Sully offered Randy a small bit of water and felt her forehead. Her fever had broken and she seemed to be coming out of the coma nicely. Still, a full examination was warranted.

"Nick, if you could wait outside?" Sully asked gently.

"No…wait…please…" Randy seemed suddenly agitated. "Nick?"

"What, Honey?" he soothed softly.

"I'm so glad you're here…" Randy smiled, relieved.

"I'm glad, too, Rand," Nick reassured her, wondering why she'd think he'd be anywhere else.

"The baby…" Randy whispered, placing her hand lightly upon her stomach. "Is the baby okay?"

Although he tried his best to hide it, Nick's face fell. Randy DID know she was pregnant! She'd known and she'd kept it from him - again! All night, Nick had persuaded himself just the opposite, convinced himself that Randy couldn't have known, that she would never do that again. She would never keep anything that important from him again.

Crushed, Nick tried valiantly to bury the hurt. Okay, so, maybe, they still did have some work to do on rebuilding their relationship. But, there would be time for that later, Nick reminded himself. For now, all that mattered was Randy and the baby.

Sully placed his hand on Nick's shoulder in support. Nick had acted with his heart tonight: every decision, every thought, had been for Randy's welfare. To be faced with her latest deception had to be devastating.

Sully's admiration for Nick only increased as he watched Nick swallow his disappointments and reply with the utmost calm in his voice, "Sure, Honey, the baby's fine, just fine…"

Randy's steady heart monitor gave a picture-perfect illustration of the success Nick's words had achieved. Sully shot Nick a tiny smile, along with his sincere look of praise, listening as Randy continued happily, "Oh, Nick, I'm so glad…"

More and more, Randy seemed to draw strength from the news, smiling as she added, drowsily, "Helen told me you'd come if you knew. I just didn't listen…"

Sully's puzzlement turned to concern as he watched Nick pale right before his eyes.

"Helen…told you?" Frightened out of his mind, Nick repeated Randy's words carefully to be sure.

"Uh-huh," Randy nodded shyly. "She'll be so glad to see Rob's back from L.A. Probably, just as glad as I am that you came back from New York…"

"New York..." Nick mumbled under his breath as the realization hit. "Oh, God…."

"Nick?" Sully questioned uneasily.

"Randy, Hon, I need to talk to the Doc for a sec, okay?" Nick patted her hand lovingly, and tried to keep his voice from shaking.

Too tired to pick up on Nick's nervousness, Randy nodded contentedly and closed her eyes quite peacefully.

"Wanna tell me what's going on?" Sully brought Nick aside with a whisper.

"That's my question…" Nick dried his sweaty palms on his jeans.

Who's Helen?" Sully asked, confused.

"Rob's Mom…" Nick replied. "She died a few months ago."

"But Randy said…" Sully seemed baffled.

"She thinks she's pregnant for the first time," Nick cut him off sharply.

"What?" Sully didn't understand.

"She thinks it's eight years ago!" Nick's voice betrayed his panic.

Astonished, Sully began to comprehend the seriousness of the situation.

"Selective amnesia…" he diagnosed, never having actually seen a case before.

"What are we supposed to do about it?" Nick pressed, frantic.

"Nothing…for now…" Sully cautioned. "She's still fragile. Any further trauma and…"

Nick's nightmare wasn't over and he knew it. "She could lose the baby," he finished quietly.

"Miranda's subconscious is protecting her from remembering," Sully surmised correctly. "About the accident…about your daughter's death…about anything that could upset her."

"It's keeping her and this baby safe - for now…" he marveled.

"And when she does remember?" Nick grabbed Sully's arm and stared him straight in the eyes.

"I would strongly recommend that you do everything to keep that from happening for as long as possible…" Sully advised, more than a bit nervous. He was in serious uncharted territory now.

"And just HOW would you suggest I do that?" Nick struggled to keep his desperation in check. "I can't turn back time!"

Sully sighed, experiencing Nick's frustration as his own. "Let me check my textbooks, make some calls…"

"Randy's subconscious will probably do most of the work," Sully theorized. "She wants to think it's eight years ago. She needs to think that. So, she's not going to let herself realize it isn't, unless she's forced to. Or, unless she's psychologically ready to handle it."

"And if it happens before she's ready?" Nick asked again, warily.

"I don't know, Nick," Sully confessed sadly.

"I just don't know…"
