"Nick, it's not going to do Randy any good for you and Rob to get into a fistfight at her bedside," Sully admonished him as they reached Randy's room.

"Open the damned door…" Nick menaced low, under his breath.

"Just stay calm, I'm warning you…" Sully's fatigue was beginning to show and his patience was wearing very thin as he opened the door just a crack.

The quiet tune under way inside left both men speechless.

"When you're weary, and feeling small…"

Sully smiled at the familiar opening lyrics, realizing that it was no longer the radio, but Rob's unaccompanied voice, which filled the room.

"When tears are in your eyes, I'll dry them all…"

Sully watched quietly, wondering what Nick would do.

Obviously, Rob was so intent on his music, so intent on Randy, that he hadn't noticed either of them enter. And so, he continued singing, smoothing Randy's hair, brushing her cheek, making sure her tears were all, indeed, dried.

For a moment, even Sully was starstruck. The lead singer of Spit possessed an amazing voice: deep, strong, yet gentle, able to transfix an audience simply by his phrasing. This man didn't need back-up singers, electric synthesizers, bass guitars or steel drums, Sully realized in awe. He just needed to feel the emotion of a song within his heart and let his extraordinary talent do the rest.

Slowly, the shakiness Rob felt began to dissipate, and with each note he became more determined, more focused on Randy's recovery.

The Simon and Garfunkel song evoked all the soothing nostalgia Sully had prescribed. Even Nick felt the pull of days gone by: easy days without a care in the world, listening to classic tunes of friendships made to last forever. And they had, until tonight...

But, whether Nick liked it or not, Rob's emotions were crystal clear: he was just as open and as vulnerable as Nick, expressing his hurt the only way he knew how…

I'm on your side
When times get rough
And friends just can't be found

Like a bridge over troubled water
I will lay me down
Like a bridge over troubled water
I will lay me down

When you're down and out
When you're on the street
When evening falls so hard
I will comfort you
I'll take your part
When darkness comes
And pain is all around

Like a bridge over trouble water
I will lay me down
Like a bridge over trouble water
I will lay me down

Sail on silver girl
Sail on by
Your time has come to shine
All your dreams are on their way
See how they shine
When you need a friend
I'm sailing right behind

Like a bridge over trouble water
I will ease your mind
Like a bridge over trouble water
I will ease your mind

The room grew still and Sully found himself visibly moved by the scene he'd just witnessed. Nick swallowed hard, wishing with all his heart, things could be different.

Then, it happened…

Randy's heart monitor began beating more loudly, more rapidly - filling the room with so much noise it scared Nick and Rob, both, half to death.

Sully shot toward Randy - stethoscope in hand.

"Wait outside!" he shouted to them.

"What the Hell did you do to her?" Nick shouted, pulling Rob away from Randy's bedside with such force that Rob's arm nearly came out of its socket.

"I was just…" Rob didn't need to see their faces to panic, he was panicked enough all on his own.

"Sshhh! I can't hear!" Sully tried to focus on his patient.

Neither man said a word. They didn't move, they didn't breath, and then…

"Nick…?"

Randy's voice was weak and hoarse but they all heard it.

"Randy!" Nick rushed to her.

Sully stood back, amazed at how little medical science actually counted in situations like this.

"I'm here, Honey…I'm here…" Nick kept saying over and over again.

"I was having a dream…" she whispered, her eyes fluttering. "We were back in high school…"

"We were, huh?" Tears of joy streamed freely down Nick's face.

"I even thought I heard Rob…" Randy added, still disoriented.

Sully hoped Nick would do what was best for the patient and, true to his word, he did just that. Wordlessly, Nick nodded for Rob to come closer.

"Right here, m'lady…" Rob joined them quickly.

"It's good to see you…" Randy smiled.

"Thanks…" Rob choked, overcome with emotion.

Realizing he'd be better off not pressing his luck, Rob decided to leave Nick and Randy alone. "I'll be outside…" he mumbled, still stunned by what had happened.

"Rob…" Nick called to him.

"Yeah?" Rob turned, surprised.

"Nice song…"
