Nick could barely keep his eyes open. He'd relived grades 7-10 with Randy, including that time he and Rob snuck into the girl's gym after cheerleading practice only to find Old Mrs. Shanahan adjusting her girdle, instead.

Story after story he'd related, all to the mellow tunes of Celine Dion, Michael Bolton, and, even, he shivered, The Captain and Tenille…

"And now to end our final segment of tonight's program…" the radio announcer crooned softly, "Luther Vandross."

Nick rolled his eyes and groaned. "C'mon, Rand…wake up…" he pleaded for the thousandth time that night. "Then we can listen to Dylan or The Stones…"

Oh, how he hoped his feeble jokes would bring Randy's bemused smile, the way they always did, but nothing…

"I love you, Randy…" he reminded her over and over again. "I need you so much… Please, don't leave me."

As the next musical selection began, Nick's eyelids drooped slightly. Exhausted, he allowed the song's lyrics to fill the empty room…

Quarter after seven, got a phone call
Telling me to get here quick.
Said your girl is in a bad situation,
They don't know if she's gonna make it.

As I hurry to be by her side
I ask a thousand times why, oh, why.
There's no rhyme or reason in my life
With you lying here this way.

Astonished by the similarities, Nick shook himself awake and began paying attention to the music. The lyrics seemed written just for him. Everything he'd been fumbling so hard to put into words for Randy, for himself, for God, was there in that one song…

I'd give anything
Just to trade places with you.
So, I'm begging heaven down on my knees
To help you make it through.

Tell me, can heaven wait?
Can heaven wait just one more night?
Tell me what it's gonna take
To keep you with me in my life?

Giving up the shame of my other life,
Now I'm seeing things in a whole new light.
Lord, I vow to change, if you just make it right.

Can heaven wait one night?

Thinking back on times that I wasted,
I should have cherished every day.
All the different flavors that I tasted,
Can't compare to you, no way.

As I reminisce by your side,
Tears of guilt are streaming from my eyes.
All the things I did that weren't right,
Wish I could apologize.

I'm gonna stop the world,
Reverse the time,
Do whatever it takes
To keep you alive.
Heaven has to wait
One more day.

Baby, take my breath, so you can breathe,
I need you here, so don't you leave.

Heaven has to wait.

One more night….

With that, the radio station concluded its broadcast for the evening and the room went strangely still. The only sound now was Nick's gentle sobbing as he laid his head on Randy's pillow beside her.

Nick had never been one to pray but at that moment, there didn't seem to be anything else to do. He'd lost so many people in his life: his parents, Helen, Mrs. E., and above all, Nicole. There had to be more to life…more to love…than just the short time we were all here on Earth together. There had to be a heaven. But the song was right. It had to wait…

And so Nick prayed, "Please, God, one more night."
