Robert cracked another egg against the side of his old cast-iron frying pan, the sizzle momentarily distracting him from the conversation currently taking place in his living room.

He'd been up since dawn, since the shouts and snarls and recriminations of three boys who were old enough to know better, had woken him, storming into his ranch house seemingly at each other's throats.

No wonder Sully had kicked them out of the hospital. Did they really think behavior like this was good for poor Miranda?

"Since when do these three think?" Robert shook his head and cracked another egg.

Robert Lawson had been making fried eggs for Nick, Shane and Rob as long as there'd been chickens in his coop. Some men bonded over beers or barbecues, but for Robert Lawson, the quickest way to find out what was bothering his son had always been a good plate of fried eggs and hash.

"I am not going to deputize you, you idiot!" Shane barked at Rob.
"Why not?" Rob shot back. "All you've got are idiots!"
"Oh, leave him alone!" Nick bellowed. "We wouldn't be in this mess if it weren't for you!"

Robert took a deep breath, said a little prayer asking Helen to keep him from strangling all three, and brought the eggs into the living room with a flourish.

"Eggs, boys?" he offered, hopefully, but the looks on their faces were enough to break his heart.

They weren't boys any more. They were men. With problems the size of Texas and then some. Shane, wracked with responsibility, Rob haunted by guilt, and Nick, petrified, as two precious lives hung by a thread that could break at any moment. Eggs hardly seemed enough. But, they were a start…

"Robert, I'm really not hungry…" Nick waved off the plate, fearing another attack of nausea.

Robert placed a comforting hand on Nick's shoulder. "Take it one bite at a time… Remember, if Miranda's eating for two, you're eating for three."

Tears welled fresh in Nick's eyes and he bit his lip to force them back, accepting the eggs with a quiet nod.

"C'mon, you, too…" Robert held out a plate each to Rob and Shane.

"I know…I know…" he countered the protests just beginning on their faces. "Catchin' killers is busy work. But, if yer both preparin' t'die in the line of duty, can you think of a finer last meal?"

With a wink and a shrug, Robert waited until all three had taken a bite before settling into his old easy chair, grateful for the momentary silence.

"Been quite a night, I'll give you that…" Robert mused somberly, eyeing the blinking remote control on the wall. When he'd installed the electrified fences around his property, Robert had expected them to be keeping the animals in, not the killers out.

Robert marveled at the frightening ease with which Rob had secured the ranch upon their arrival. Guess his boy really had been paying attention all those evenings growing up. Or was it the lessons he'd learned from celebrity stalkers? Maybe it was the violent lesson he'd learned just tonight?

No, they weren't boys any more… Robert sighed again.

Pensively, Nick looked up from his eggs. "How am I ever gonna keep Randy thinking it's the past?" he asked to no one in particular.

Robert had always been a man to tackle his problems one by one. This one might be easier than most. "When she's well enough t'travel, take her t'my cabin up in the high country."

"It's quiet…secluded…nobody up there but the squirrels," Robert added for effect.

Encouraged, Shane had finally heard the first practical suggestion of the evening. "That could work…"

"She couldn't stay alone," Nick vetoed dejectedly.

"What about Teddy?" Rob ventured, even if it meant Nick biting his head off again.

"Teddy?" Nick mulled the possibility without rancor.

"He'll need to recuperate. You two could rotate…" Rob swallowed a forkful of hash.

"Heck, we could all take turns, if ya need us, Nick," Robert assured him. "She'd never be alone."

"It could work, Nick…" Shane sounded more convinced this time.

Decisively, Nick finished his eggs. "I should go tell Sully… He can let me know what she'll need."

"You just let me know, Nick, and I'll stock the cabin myself," Robert patted Nick on the back as he stood.

"Can you guys…?" Nick paused, wanting to return to Randy so desperately, yet well aware that the subject of what to do about Frank Aurora was still to be addressed.

"We'll work out a plan, Nick, don't you worry," Robert replied confidently. "Say hello to Miranda for me, and stop back around lunchtime, why don't ya?" he insisted with a grin.

"Lunch, huh?" Nick smiled weakly. Apparently, Robert was on a crusade to feed him now on a regular basis.

"Most important meal o' the day…" Robert winked. "Don't be late."

Ushering Nick safely out the door, Robert turned his attention to Rob and Shane, who had begun arguing again in the short time his back had been turned.

"No!" Shane snapped.

"I can do it!" Rob pressed undeterred. "I'm an actor!"

"You're a singer!" Shane scoffed. "There's no way you could pull that off!"

"Watch me!" Rob snarled, heading into the bathroom, the door slamming behind him.

"He's out of his mind!" Shane stormed to the phone in a huff, both men leaving Robert in their wake.

Grimacing, Robert Lawson heaved a very heavy sigh.

"Guess I'll make some more eggs…."
