When Nick returned to the ranch a few hours later, it was to find Shane shielding himself from the noonday sun. Sitting on the steps of Robert's front porch, his shoulders slumped from exhaustion, Shane snapped his cellphone closed in his hand.

"Time for lunch already?" he quipped, leaning back against the top step.

"I'm never late for chili…" Nick sat down beside him, similarly exhausted. "Where's Rob?"

"Damned if I know," Shane scowled. "We aren't exactly speaking at the moment."

"Join the club," Nick nodded likewise.

"Any news?" Nick asked, gesturing towards Shane's cellphone.

"Val's having the devil's own time keepin' Sunny at the boarding house," Shane replied. "She's as hellbent as Rob inta takin' matters int' her own hands."

"I swear, Nick, I'm this close to lettin' 'em kill themselves…" Shane fumed.

"Works for me," Nick's anger at the pair hadn't dimmed.

"Cmon," Nick groaned. Then, reaching for Shane's arm, he hauled him forcibly off the porch steps. "Let's get some chili…"

"So yer advice'd be t'raise the fence height another six feet?" Robert was deep in conversation with a dark-haired businessman when Nick and Shane entered.

"Oops, sorry, didn't know you were busy, Robert…" The pair turned to leave.

"No, boys, wait…I'd like ya both t'meet someone," Robert insisted. "This here's Erik Maxwell. He's a security specialist I called in t'check the ranch."

As Robert began his introductions, the man stood. He was the tallest in the room by far, dressed in a simple, foreboding, black suit. His hair was short but thick - almost as thick as his mustache - and his voice filled the room with a powerful Texas twange.

"Gentlemen…" His eyes seemed to be searching Shane and Nick's, challenging their authority from the start.

"Sheriff Shane Garrett…Detective Nick Hathaway…" Shane and Nick introduced themselves, matching the man's firm handshake.

"My friends in Vegas tell me Erik's the one t'call when ya need…protection." Robert said that last word in a hush. Pulling the two men aside, he pointed to the slight silhouette of a pistol beneath Erik's jacket.

"He's a hitman?" Nick almost choked with a mixture of shock and laughter.

"Oh, I am not hearing this…" Shane winced, shaking his head furiously.

"Rob always says 'hire only the best,'" Robert divulged in a whisper. "Isn't that what we need right now?"

"Speaking of your wayward spawn…" Nick interrupted, holding his hand up to stop Robert's explanation. "Where is Rob?"

"Can I be of service gentlemen?" The interloper came up behind Shane and Nick, placing one arm on each of their shoulders.

"Ahh, no, thanks, we got it covered…." Visibly annoyed, the two brushed Erik's hands away and pulled Robert aside again.

"Where is he, Robert?" Shane demanded, feeling the urge to strangle Rob with his bare hands. What kind of man suggests his father meet with a hitman, anyway? Oh, Hollywood had really messed with Rob's head!!!

"If I could have a minute of your time, gentlemen…" Erik was once again inserting himself into the conversation.

"Look…" Angrily, Nick turned to face Robert's visitor. "I don't know who you think you are, fella, but if you know what's good for you, you'll just stay clear until we can straighten this all out with…"

"Rob," Robert finished Nick's sentence for him, an inexplicable twinkle in his eye.

"Exactly…" Nick and Shane agreed, waiting.

"Rob." Robert repeated his son's name again, this time, turning Nick and Shane pointedly toward Erik, forcing them to stare deeply into his eyes.

There, they discovered a second infuriating twinkle - the perfect match to Robert's.

Instantly, Nick and Shane growled in unison.

"Rob…"
