You know, I was thinking about converting my M-40 to a gaff rig. It usially seems like a good idea after a couple of glasses of gin - and I've been drinking alot lately. I've made a couple of sketches - usially on bar napkins. And I do really like the idea, there is that little problem of a triad in the way, not to mention the spreaders are too low. But, I think it would look great! You could argue it would ruin the 'balance', but it's not a fast sailer anyway..... - just a thought....

[> Junk Rig in storms -- Mike m-40 chaser, - Sunday - 06/24/07 - 2:57pm

I had a friend in the early 70's that built a H-28 design boat utilizing a junk rig. He left Mississippi and I have never heard from him again. ???? From pitchpoling cat's and broaching every mono I had, I don't think I would care to cross any body of water with the junk rig. They look nice but, when I'm upside down, I want my rigging to come up in one piece. I'm re-rigging my 40 and plan to add a few more stays. In my younger days, when flying a hull and jumping on the front of the leeward hull to see what happens, hanging more sails than the boat could handle, going out in hurricane "Bob", I never wanted a junk rig during any of these events. But, a fair weather sailor might desire such a rig. But, who wants to only sail when the wearher is nice? My suggestion is leave the rigging alone, other than adding a few stays, or buy a day sailer with a junk rig.
