 At 12:01 a.m. on August 1,1981, the television network Music Television was launched. The first video played was “Video Killed The Radio Star” by the Buggles. The “VJ’s” included Martha Quinn, Nina Blackwood, Mark Goodman, JJ Jackson, and Alan Hunter.

On January 24, 1959, a British publication called “Disc Weekly” featured an article on J.P. “The Big Bopper” Richardson” stating that Richardson and Mercury Records Executive Harry Walters be given the title of “Most Original Brain” for the idea that in the future music videos or films will be used to promote artists’ records (“Records will be filmed!”). Big Bopper made three videos to promote his music in advance for an upcoming tour overseas. The article goes on to say “of course, jukeboxes will have to be turned to vision.”

After a February 2, 1959 performance at the Surf Ballroom in Clear Lake, Iowa, less than 10 days after the publication of the Disc Weekly article, Richardson, along with fellow artists Buddy Holly and Ritchie Valens, boarded a V-tailed Beechcraft Bonanza plane at the Mason City, Iowa Airport piloted by Roger Peterson.

The plane took off for Fargo, North Dakota at approximately 12:55 a.m. and crashed eight minutes later, killing all aboard.

The Big Bopper is best known for his hit “Chantilly Lace” and for being the songwriter of #1 hits “White Lightning” (George Jones) and “Running Bear” (Johnny Preston).

It should NEVER be forgotten that Disc Weekly published this article about Big Bopper’s idea almost TWENTY-THREE YEARS before the launch of Music Television.
