Um...I feel the need to step in here. You will notice that this Lauren kid did not start spelling things out in Internet Newspeak until *after* she had gotten her head bitten off for finding Guber unattractive. In case any of you allegedly "more mature" people don't understand what she was doing, perhaps you should pick up a dictionary and look up the word "sarcasm." Lauren-lizz obviously has a better comprehension of it than some of her critics. Personally, I thought it was a hoot. She may indeed be lacking in the manners department, but a: she isn't alone in that, and b: Kid's got some chutzpah.

Josh, there is a difference between mistyping the word "idiot" and not knowing how to spell it in the first place. Perhaps she missed it proofreading, or perhaps she was too lazy to proofread. In either case, you had better never let a typo get posted, or you'll be revealing yourself to be a Class-A hypocrite.

Finally, it never ceases to amaze me that so many people (and I DO mean "many" and not "just one") who get up on their high horses and demand that others exercise "tolerance" don't seem to do so themselves. Are not fifteen-year-old girls who find the character Guber unattractive (and are "brave" enough to stand up for what they believe in and say so publicly) entitled to "tolerance?" Or is it only people who agree with the people preaching it? In a thread I read earlier, someone--I think it was Dave, but I could be mistaken--was offended by elements of the most recent episode. The invective "tolerance" that was directed at him was heart-burning. Standing up for what he thinks is a bad thing in his case; he's just supposed to stop watching the show, rather than put his opinion on the floor for sober discussion. You know, Saleem, perpetual target that he is, posts to this board week in and week out advancing what he believes (since his "arguments" so rarely have any cogent logical structure and are grounded so heavily in emotion, I hesitate to say "defending" what he believes), and knowing that he is going to be ripped to shreds for it--but I have yet to see anyone refer to his posting as "brave" or demand "tolerance" for his fiercely anti-homosexual point of view.

You know what? I'll joke with the Guberettes, because there is, in fact, no accounting for taste (I think Jeanne Tripplehorn is the most attractive carbon-based lifeform on this globe; my best friend thinks she's a dog. Amazingly enough, there is room in each of our philosophies to accommodate the other's belief). But personally, I don't see what they see in him. Physically, I'm sure some women could take him, and some could leave him. That's true for all guys. And while I know nothing about Anthony Heald's personality, I know that the character he plays on BP is a perfect example of this nineties, post-feminist, milquetoast-in-need-of therapy nothing-without-a-woman man that Oprah, Alan Alda, and that ilk are so fond of preaching as some kind of ideal. He's a weak man. He's weak in his masculinity. He's (dramatic pause) *vulnerable* (as though this were a plus). Now, it seems that historically, this is exactly the kind of ensemble-show character that is going to have the most vocal and passionate female fan base. I've seen example after example of it. Well, that's fine. I'm not going to begrudge any guy the ladies who lust him. By the same token, they had better not begrudge me the right to say, "What...is...*WITH*...you???" Or I'll be sure to yell "You...HYPOCRITE!!!" at the top of my lungs.

Now, if you tolerance-preachers choose not to tolerate Lauren, or Dave(?), or me, I'm not worried about it. There are plenty of people I can't tolerate--six plus billion. But then, I'm only pointing out the hypocrisy laden in the approach some people who demand tolerance take. And for the record, no, I don't know Lauren.
