Because historically, a "real man" was defined as someone who had a strong work ethic, someone who understood the meaning of duty, and someone who treated women with kindness. Notice that this definition does not include physical strength, social confidence or sexual prowess. Many personalities fit into this framework, including Scott's. However "vulnerable" he may be in some situations, he stands up when it counts- whether it be to maintain his professional integrity (as he did countless times with Meredith), to stick up for honesty and principle (staring down that smarmy lawyer in defense of Harvey), or to defend a more traditional pedagogy that values strict standards of academic achievement and behavior (a pedagogy to which our schools desperately need to return IMO). I see nothing that is less than masculine in this character- unless of course one defines masculinity in terms of a love of sports and an ability to engage in locker room bull sessions.
