Subject: Steroid Induced Psychosis

I stumbled across this site as I was trying to find any information possible about Steroid Induced Psychosis.....until a week ago, I had never heard of this.

My 24 year-old daughter got a steroid shot on 9-15-07 for infected chigger bites.....the following weeks, she became angrier and angrier with pounding headaches and extreme anxiety....this was completely out of character for her and we just assumed she was completely overwhelmed with wedding plans....she has never suffered from anxiety or depression. Three weeks after the shot, I took my daughter to the Dr. because she was fainting and becoming paranoid and thought people were following her. Our family physician (an internist) said she definintely had high anxiety and he put her on Cymbalta once a day and Xanex three times a day. Three weeks after that, my husband and I had to drive 1.5 hrs. to go pick our daughter up because she was so psychotic, she was calling everyone she knew and making no sense. We took our daughter to a psychiatric hospital immediately and the Dr. there said she was over medicated at the meds went to her head and she was given anti-psychotic drugs and we took her home for the worst week of our lives.......not only was she psychotic, she went through withdrawals from the Cymbalta and Xanex.

In the meantime, my husband and I are remembering an incident that my husband went through at almost the exact same age as our daughter....when he was also 24, my husband had the exact some symptoms and was admitted to a psychiatric hospital for 10 days and put on anti-psychotic meds. Following his release from the hospital, my husband recovered and never had another incident and has never taken meds of any kind since......we always just assumed he had a nervous break-down...until now. Two weeks before my husband's incident, my husband was given a steroid shot for poison ivy!!!!! We made the connection and our daughter's psychiatrist is convinced she suffered Steroid Induced Psychosis from the steroid injection.

The worst thing you can do for Steroid Induced Psychosis is take anti-depressants.....exactly what our daughter was given by our family doctor.

I am outraged by the mis-diagnosis and am unable to believe in my 46 years I have NEVER heard of this type of incident from a steroid shot......our family physician knew our daughter had the shot and even he didn't make the connection.....more public knowlege is needed and its so sad that we have to self-diagnose!!

Our daughter has been on the anti-psychotic meds for almost 3 weeks now (the side effects can be frightening frome the meds too) and is under the care of a psychiatrist and is continually getting better every day......I just want to make this public as I don't want others to have to endure this nightmare.

Has anyone heard of this from one steroid shot?????
