HI G,
I am so sorry to hear about your husband's health and both of you going through this ordeal. I am glad you found our website and will be happy to help anyway I can. My story is in the "BIO" section and it is alot like your husbands in many ways. First thing, I want to reassure you that it does sund like thi was all cause by the corticsteroids. It doesn't matter if it was in a pill, shot or topical because once it is systemic it is all the same. The good news is that most if not all the damage it has done is reversible. If the diabetes is II than it is also reversible. It will take time since the steroids have to leave the system and the lenfth of time that takes is different for everyone. Factors like the strength, duration, how often applied, even body type make up how long it may take to leave the system. Corticosteroids are stored in your liver sometimes for more than a year even after they have been used. He needs to get his eyes tested as they can cause opened angled glaucoma and cataracts. He needs to get a bone density test because they can cause bone thining. Steroid-induced psychosis is devastating but it too is reversible. If he is having muscle or joint pain, drinking more water should help. It sounds like you have a good ND and I'd love to know his name. As you have seen there is a white coat of silence when doctors know you have been hurt by steroids prescribed by another doctor. I don't know what city or state you are in but there is one dermatologist that understands completely about the damage steroids can do. His name is Dr. Robert Brodell and he is in Ohio. You can google him. He has written published articles about dangers of topical corticosteroids. I don't know if the email I have for him is still working but let me know if you would like it.
You can email me directly. Has your husband had a
24 hour urine cortisol test or an ACTH blood test (to check his HPA axis ) it checks his thyroid and adrenal glands etc. I know how hard this must have been on you both and anyone who loves him. He is going to get better and I truly believe the worst is over. The sense of anger and betrayal at what has been done is easy to understand. I am so sorry this happens with even the nicest, well meaning doctors. But the cover-ups are harder to take. Endocrinologists understand what corticosteroids do to the body but like many doctors they may not be forthcoming because it was caused by what another doctor did. There is a page on our website that lists corticosteroid side-effects. You didn't mention it but trouble sleeping is common. I hope this information helps. If you need further assistance I'm only an email away.
Just remember every day is one day closer to having this out of his system.
Best Wishes
