Fenira, just an additional comment from someone else who has a little background.

The depressed will have the desire to do something that means everything to them, but for some reason they just can't find the energy or motivation to force themselves to accomplish that task. you're right that they 'don't extract the same joy from doing it in that depressed state', however, i'm pretty sure it isn't because they don't think it's worth anything. the important aspects of their life mean everything to them. it's just really difficult to make the body do as 'desire' wishes. to them there is a great 'point' in those desired activities. which shows that depression is such an ugly cyclic torture.. the want is there, the attempt is there, but the ability to physically achieve the goal seems so distant and impossible, and then the tiredness sets in, then the activity is a 'failure' because it hasn't been fully achieved. so, they do know and believe that it is worth everything, but they just can't seem to do it. what a bummer!
ps, i'm obsessed with covering books.
pps, obsession is a symptom of an anxiety disorder.
pps, i didnt mean by the 'pps' to any way imply that i had an anxiety disorder. i wrote it only for your future reference.
ppps, i have now become obsessed with pps's; oh, and with the word obsession.
