Taking her hands in his and lowering them to the bed, he gave her a small tearful smile before dropping his emotion-blurred eyes aside, clearing his throat. A strange sensation, to remember what it was to cry... And she did not think less of him for witnessing that break in a strong character. She loved him for who he was... And he would not ask her why. Why him, of all men. Maybe did not want to know why. For as many lovers that he had left in his trail, even those that had stalked him as a prize, there was no reason to love him any longer than a night. Maybe two. Anything longer was... lunacy. Or a deeper kind of love... One he did not fully understand. Yet. Lifting his eyes back up to hers, he studied the patient features, so delicate in death, death that he had forced on her. And found himself a greater treasure than ever he had anticipated upon picking up her trail down a long midnight alley so many years ago. Giving her hands a light squeeze and an almost shy smile, uncertain of how to proceed with the promised changes, he leaned forward to brush a gentle kiss to her cheek -was the timing right to kiss her further?- and murmured heartfelt honesty that he ought to have said with such sincerity long ago. "Thank you, love, for... for being here... For... being patient."
