Subject: How far was the LoN a cause of WWII

They do this all the time! The first thing you have to realise is that this is not a question about the League of Nations - it is a question about the Causes of WWI (for which see the page www.johndclare.net/RoadtoWWII7a.htm).
The essay wants you to see the LoN as just one of the causes of WWII, and to compare its importance against the other causes.
The way to answer 'How Far' questions is always the same:
1. Firstly, you write - 'IN SOME WAYS the LoN was VERY important in causing WWII'. Then you explain the argument which would support this idea - your ideas about discrediting itself and not enforcing the Treaty of Versailles are great here. Also, the reason Chamberlain appeasrd Hitler was because he didn't think the LoN was strong enough to stop Germany. I would also add something about Manchuria and Abyssinia and everybody abandoning the League.
2. Then you say: 'HOWEVER (which is the KEY word) there were many other factors other than the LoN which caused WWII.' And you explain the arguments which would support this idea - talk about the faults in the ToV, and how appeasement encouraged Hitler, and about Hitler's ambition, and about how the events 1933-39 caused growing antagonism etc. Explain how these OTHER FACTORS also helped cause WWII.
3. Finally, you write: 'IN CONCLUSION THEREFORE...' And you write a paragraph saying which you think was more important in causing WWII - the LoN, or all the other factors. It is this conclusion which answers the 'how far' bit the the essay.

Two things to note.
a. It is VERY important that you use the connectives at the start of each section of the essay 'In some ways...' 'However...' 'In conclusion therefore...' or your essay just looks as though you're continually disagreeing with yourself. You have to structure the written text so that the developing argument is clear.
b. There are lots of this kind of essay, where you are asked to comment on a particular interpretation, and the essay structure is always the same - in some ways, yes; for lots of reasons, no; so in conclusion therefore... Once you have got the knack of recognising this kind of question, and of structuring an answer, you will be able to churn out sound essays very easily.
