Personally, i dont regard the paintings as all that simple...on first glance, they r bare n there is very little to actually focus on, however, the colours, though often mediocre are made up of many different tones and occasionally, splashes of violet (e.g. in "pope") and other colours (find more examples) r used. I would argue that though the actual painting is simple and raw, the use of colours is complex as there r ver little single or flat colours used.

I dunno if the first bit was a critcism, more of an observation but i do agree that the ghostly subject matter does force attention to the background which is often overlooked. If the subject matter was of little importance to Bacon, it would explain why he chose to use this certain style- by doing so, he is imposing his lack of interest in the subject matter on to the audience, forcing them to, like him, look through and beyond wot is in front of thier eyes.
