I think it's important to mention here that the race riots of last year were instigated by the national front; the BNP have consciously distanced themselves from the national front.

All I was trying to do by raising the issues of their other policies, was to point out that they really don't strike me as altogether right wing, let alone extremist.

You and Sarah raised an interesting point about moral panics being created in the media, and you asked why it was that they were so adamant to denounce the BNP. I guess all newspapers (but particularly the red tops) are always striving for good stories, so sensitive issues are always popular. You won't see the Guardian, The Times or even the Mail launching such vigorous attacks on the BNP. The obvious point to make here would be that this was because they are influenced by their own institutional values (and political leanings), but then the same must be said for the tabloids. They value celebrity issues and trivialities as important news, so there is no way anyone can seriously value anything they ever have to say. There is never anything honest to come out of the tabloids, and this term moral panic is a good one to describe their entire ethos. Moral panics dont last a very long time at all. The 70s was based on football hooliganism, the 80s on characateuring Thatcher, last year was a moral panic on paedophilia...none of it lasts, because people get bored about reading the same thing for too long. Surely this negates everything about the democratic values of tabloid newspapers? They dont really give two shits about the BNP, or hooliganism, or thatcher, or byers, or mandelson, or ronnie biggs, or september 11th. They'd rather put a picture of Beckham's foot or Kylie's arse on the front page, than anything worthy of serious value.
