I'also had four teeth extracted. First premolars on the right and second premolars on the left. I only ever consulted with one ortho, who recommmended extractions...i was quite hasty in my decision to go ahead with extractions and braces, so after i had the extractions done, i actually got quite concerned about how my profile would change now. One of the reasons the ortho said i need extractions is because i have protrusive lips and with extractions the lips can be moved back a bit.

I also did a lot of research on the net and basically every paper i found (from credible sources) said that extractions do not have a negative effect on facial esthetics and research has shown that after treatment both orthodontists and lay people cannot tell by looking at pictures, whether the person had teeth extracted or not. Another paper also showed that the archwidth is not decreased when having extractions, neither is the number of visible teeth when you smile!

All this info helped me a lot when i was feeling down about having gaping holes in my mouth.

Hope this helps! I can post you links to the article if you want, just need to find them again.
