I have been getting canker sores since i was about 6 and now that i have braces i get them even more. The actual cause of canker sores has not been defenitly determined but research has found that their development might be related to a reaction of your immune system.
After research i have found that something that can cause them is a VERY common ingredient in mouthwashes and toothpastes, sodium lauryl sulfate. My ortho also confirmed that that might cause them. Id say look at the indredients in your new mouthwash and see if it contains this ingredient. Also they can be caused by cuts and irritation in your mouth as most of us wearing braces have found out. I get the from all of the above and from chocolate! (which might mean im allergic to it) The other possible reasons go on and on...

I have been through numerous canker sore medications, both otc and prescription. If your looking from a product that will not numb the canker sore Id say try Zilactin-B canker sore gel, which you could probibly find at a local drugstore. It forms a coating on the sore which can stay even through eating. The only thing is it stings quite a bit when you put it on but only for a brief moment.

Sorry about the canker sore, i know they hurt!

Lauren
